A full gameplay showcase demonstrating Spider-Man's abilities in Marvel's Midnight Suns has been released, giving fans their closest look at yet at the web-slinging, wall-crawling, fast-talking Peter Parker.
Host Christopher Odd took to the official Marvel's Midnight Suns YouTube channel to outline and showcase some of Spider-Man's most interesting and unique abilities, explaining what sets him apart from the other characters in the upcoming tactical RPG from developer Firaxis and publisher 2K Games.
In the new gameplay showcase, Odd shows off some of Spider-Man's cards (in addition to being a tactical role-playing game, Midnight Suns is also a card-based deckbuilder). One of these cards is "Opportunist," which allows Peter to execute environmental attacks without spending Heroism, Midnight Suns' primary consumable resource. Spidey also has a passive ability which has a small chance of refunding the Heroism cost of an environmental attack. These two moves work in tandem strategically, but they also give a nice bit of flavor to the character -- of course Spider-Man would be particularly good at swinging objects in his environment around. That flavor extends into some of Spider-Man's more basic attack cards, like Webslinger and Web Throw, which help him command the battlefield by offering up area-of-effect attacks and damage boosts.
Because Midnight Suns is focused on the Marvel superheroes' fight against Lilith, the commander of a demonic army populated by some classic Marvel characters, Spidey picks up some fancy mystical powers, too. One of these is the extremely powerful Infernal Spider card, which allows him to play three consecutive cards for free without expending card plays. This gives Peter a little more time on the battlefield to clear out enemies.
Midnight Suns' Spider-Man is apparently best suited for dealing with weaker enemies while leaving the tankier foes to heroes with higher damage output, but his moveset offers up some impressive potential for crowd control. Plus, to make the deal a little sweeter, he's voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, reprising his critically beloved fan-favorite role as Peter Parker in Marvel's Spider-Man. That title is headed to PC in the form of Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered in August, offering up another avenue for webheads to enjoy his voicework as the character.
Marvel's Midnight Suns is headed to PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Windows on October 7. The game will be headed to Nintendo Switch at a later, still unconfirmed date.
