The first look at Cate Blanchett’s Hela and the first official look at Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie from Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok” has arrived via the cover for the next issue of Entertainment Weekly. The latest characters to join the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe stand on either side of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, who is himself sporting a new look — and a new choice in weaponry.
Gone is the God of Thunder’s familiar hammer, Mjolnir. In its place Thor wields a pair of swords — rather impressive looking swords, to be fair, but a noticeable shift from past portrayals. Knowing how important the mystical Uru hammer is to the character, its absence is likely a pretty important plot point in the upcoming sequel.
Beyond his new armament, Thor’s overall look is rather different as well. The Avengers has apparently decided to do away with his flowing locks, opting instead for a high and tight hairstyle. He’s also wearing a different outfit, one that sports a more gladiator-esque appearance, which is fitting considering the film will be forcing him into a gladiator pit to battle his friend and teammate, the Hulk.
As for Blanchett’s outfit, it’s a pretty close approximation of the concept art we’ve already seen for Hela. The character’s iconic black and green look has obviously survived its transition from the pages of the comics to the big screen, complete with what looks to be a rather majestic cape. While she’s not wearing her signature headgear, early artist’s renditions of the Asgardian give us hope that it will appear in the film.
Thompson’s Valkyrie, as expected, looks the most different from her comic book counterpart. Aside from the obvious difference in race (in the comics, Valkyrie is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed character of Nordic origins), the outfit we see here is more practical for battle than her Marvel Comics counterpart’s. As for whether she’ll be bringing her winged horse Aragorn along with her remains to be seen, but Thompson certainly looms ready to throw down, here.
In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger — the Incredible Hulk!
Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban and Mark Ruffalo, “Thor: Ragnarok” is set to be released on November 3, 2017.
