Marvel's "Cloak and Dagger" TV Series Greenlit By Freeform

Marvel's long-discussed "Cloak and Dagger" television adaptation has been given a straight-to-series order by Freeform, the cable channel previously known as ABC Family.

Variety characterizes the series as a "superhero love story" based on the comic book characters created by Bill Mantlo and artist Ed Hannigan.

"Cloak and Dagger" will center on Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, teenagers from different backgrounds who grapple with newly acquired superpowers -- Tandy can emit daggers of light, while Tyrone can engulf others in darkness -- even as they fall in love.

No writer is attached to the series, but a search is under way by producers Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios.

Marvel has discussed a possible "Cloak and Dagger" series since at least 2010, when it was part of a planned television slate that included "Hulk," "AKA Jessica Jones" and "Mockingbird."

UPDATED: April 7 at 3:58 PM: Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb commented on the planned "Cloak and Dagger" series.

"We are thrilled to be able to explore another corner of the Marvel Universe with Cloak and Dagger," said Loeb, who will serve as an Executive Producer. "We want to thank Tandy and Tyrone's fans everywhere who have been waiting for this exciting news."
