WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Marvel's Avengers DLC mission, "Operation: Hawkeye - Future Imperfect," available now.

The newest DLC for Marvel's Avengers has arrived, and this time, users get to play as the team's resident archer, Clint Barton. "Operation: Hawkeye - Future Imperfect" continues a story that began in the Kate Bishop expansion. Hawkeye was missing during the game's main storyline, but it was eventually revealed that he was in another timeline entirely. Indeed, Clint time-traveled into the future, finding himself in a dystopian era where the Kree had destroyed their world. Now, the Hawkeye DLC has Clint lead a team of Avengers into this very timeline.

This dark future may borrow the name of The Incredible Hulk's "Future Imperfect" storyline but, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the Old Man Logan comic series also serves as inspiration for "Operation: Hawkeye." In fact, the DLC shows that an Old Man Logan video game is something that needs to happen.

At the start of "Operation: Hawkeye - Future Imperfect," Clint Barton experiences a sort of vision shortly after returning to the present. This dream takes place in the dark future he just returned from, and it features an elderly version of himself. This opening level allows users to play as Old Man Hawkeye in the "Future Imperfect" storyline. But the character himself originates from the 2008 Old Man Logan comic series by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven.

The comic series took place in an alternate future where most of the world's superheroes -- the Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four -- had been killed after the Red Skull coordinated a massive attack involving multiple supervillains. Years after the fall of the heroes, the world was now a bleak, dystopian reality, and an aging Wolverine went on a quest through the wastelands that, eventually, saw him team-up with an elderly Clint Barton. The series proved to be a hit, and it spawned several spinoff series, including Old Man HawkeyeOld Man Quill and Avengers of the Wastelands.

The world of Old Man Logan is dark, twisted, violent and unexpected. The dystopian setting allows for wholly different takes on established characters and the introduction of new superheroes. It's a world that can be reimagined and expanded upon with very few limits, and the Hawkeye DLC of Marvel's Avengers gives us a small idea of what a game set in that world could look like. The bulk of the missions in "Future Imperfect" take place in the dystopian timeline, and it allows the game to feel fresh and exciting again.

Playing through a storyline that includes a version of Old Man Hawkeye truly makes us wish for a full game set in the world of Old Man Logan. This hypothetical game could mix elements of Marvel's Avengers and the Western-inspired open world of Red Dead Redemption II to deliver an ambitious game that could star alternate takes of fan-favorite characters, both new and old. The entire wastelands could be open to travel and explore as players attempt to survive a dark era filled with menaces that include an evil Hulk, a Venom T-Rex and a Universal Church of Truth devoted to Galactus, among others. There would essentially be very few limits to what this game could include. And that is something every Marvel fan would most assuredly love to play.

The Hawkeye DLC is brief, but its inclusion of Old Man Hawkeye has basically shown the potential of the Old Man Logan universe as a video game -- and it's massive.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix, Marvel's Avengers is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Google Stadia and PC.
