Marvel Zombies will bring Phase 4 of the MCU into its undead world.

CBR was on hand at Marvel Studios' animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where the first Marvel Zombies details were revealed. Not only will the series be Marvel's first show for mature audiences, but it will also bring even more undead heroes and villains to animated life. Director Bryan Andrews said Marvel and the What If...? creative team decided to make a Marvel Zombies spinoff after the reception of Season 1's "What If... Zombies?!" The show was also inspired by the episode's cliffhanger ending, which saw the survivors head to Wakanda, unaware that a zombified Thanos was waiting for them.

The creatives then revealed the first batch of zombies from the show, including an arrow-filled Hawkeye, a cut-in-half Captain America, Abomination, Ghost, Captain Marvel, Okoye, and the return of Scarlet Witch. Finally, Ikaris from Eternals appeared with his glowing golden circuitry exposed.

Facing off against the zombies will be Yelena Belova, Katy from Shang-Chi, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo (complete with playing cards), Death Dealer, Shang-Chi, and Ms. Marvel. Kamala Khan will actually play a big role on the series. In addition, the show will introduce a post-apocalyptic Widows team and a Skrull biker gang.

Comic book scribe Zeb Wells is writing the project, and Marvel Studios' VP and Creative Director of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding is returning to work on the show. While What If...? Season 2 will arrive in 2023, there's no word yet on when Marvel Zombie will hit Disney+.

Marvel Zombies was first announced during Disney+ Day in November 2021. The show is not only based on the What If...? episode but the hit comic book series. The original Marvel Zombies was a five-issue limited series by Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips. It ran from December 2005 to April 2006 and spun off from Ultimate Fantastic Four. Set in an alternate universe (Earth-2149), the series saw the various heroes and villains transformed into flesh-eating zombies thanks to a virus from another dimension. It went on to spawn several sequels (including a crossover with Dynamite Entertainment's Army of Darkness) and tie-ins, most recently in 2020 with Marvel Zombies: Resurrection.

Marvel Zombies does not yet have a release date on Disney+.
