The first team of X-Men introduced in 1963 was a youthful group. The youngest was Bobby Drake, aka, Iceman. The oldest was either Cyclops or Beast. While no ages were assigned to these characters, it was assumed they were in their upper teens.

However, they weren't the youngest members to join the X-Men during its years of activity. Some were initiated while in early adolescence. Others joined when they were barely in their teens. Here are the 10 youngest mutants to ever join the X-Men.

10 Maggot

Over the decades, the X-Men have had some interesting members come and go. One of these is the blue-skinned youngster known as Maggot. No, this mutant, whose real name is Japheth, is not a Smurf. Instead, he has the power to release two slugs from his body. They, in turn, can eat through any solid object.

Maggot's tenure on the X-Men was short-lived. Though he was asked to join the training group known as Generation X, he decided to go his own way and live in peace.

9 Jubilee

Jubilee using her mutant powers

Once Kitty Pryde got too old to be the X-Men's little sister, Jubilee came around to take her place. Introduced in X-Men #244 way back in 1989, this teen was peppier and more street smart than her predecessor. She was willing to be upfront when it came to battle. In truth, Jubilee could be considered one of the first characters for the "Extreme" movement of the 1990s.

Readers have watched Jubilee mature over the decades as she jumped between X-Men teams. During M-Day, she lost her "fireworks" powers. However, she gained new ones later after being bitten by a vampire. In the new generation of X-Men books, she has regained her ability to blow things up and is now a member of Excalibur.

8 Kid Gladiator

The Shi'ar emperor known as Gladiator could be considered an honorary member of the X-Men. He and his colleagues have been part of the Merry Mutants' numerous space-faring adventures. Hence, the reason why his son Kubark, known as Kid Gladiator, eventually made his way to Earth and the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.

Actually, he was there because he nearly destroyed a Shi'ar city. In other words, Emperor Gladiator needed his son to control his powers before an entire planet was eliminated. After several adventures with the X-Men and his fellow students, Kubark returned to Shi'ar territory to enroll in the Guardian Academy.

7 Cable

When Jonathan Hickman relaunched the X-Men line of books in 2019, there were several changes. Many of them were appreciated by fans who wanted a fresh start. Others, like the de-aging of Cable, weren't taken as well.

Those fans were used to the grizzled older son of Scott Summers and Jean Grey. He was the one who eventually created the X-Force with members of the original New Mutants. Making him a teenager nearly wiped away all of his history. Now, he's probably younger than his father was when he joined the X-Men.

6 Quentin Quire

Think of Quentin as the younger brother who reads your diary and uses the information against you. Yet, he doesn't go as far as completely destroying your life. Now, add Omega-level telepathic mutant skills, and you have the teen who would become Kid Omega.

Starting as a student at Xavier's school, one of the first things he did is start a riot. Then, he questioned Professor X's desire to unite mutants and humans. After Charles' death, he teamed up with Wolverine's group of X-Men. Eventually, Quentin grew up, graduated, and is now part of the newly formed X-Force.

5 Iceman

Bobby Drake was the counterpart to the Fantastic Four's Johnny Storm. Both were considered the lighthearted members of their respective teams. They even had a common elemental theme to their powers.

In the original X-Men, Bobby was considered the equivalent of a younger brother. It wasn't until he discarded his living snowman look that the others considered him a serious threat. In fact, control of his powers improved as he got older. Thus, he rose to the ranks of being an Omega-level mutant over time.

4 Magik

Illyana Rasputina has been part of the X-Men family since she was six. At first, it was through a familial connection, as her brother join Piotr joined the team as Colossus. Later, she was a member of Xavier's New Mutants team as Magik. Eventually, she became a full-time member of Scott Summers' version of the X-Men.

During all that time, Magik remained one of the youngest members. Perhaps it was all of the time she spent as the ruler of Limbo. Or it could be a result of her Soulsword. No matter the reason, she still retains that youthful glow of someone who could eliminate you at a moment's notice.

3 Prodigy

Unlike Wile E. Coyote, David Alleyne is a super genius. Not only before his mutant powers kicked in but also afterward. Once initialized, David could retain the skills of everyone he met. After he enrolled in the Institute with the codename Prodigy, David rapidly went from a New Mutants trainee to a full-time member of the X-Men.

There's a rub to his membership. He was promoted after he lost his mutant powers on M-Day. Instead of taking on all the statistical and combat skills of his teammates, Prodigy used his original intelligence to help them through numerous battles. After leaving the team, David joined the Young Avengers.

2 Hope

Hope Summers, named by her adoptive father Cable,  joined the X-Men right after her birth. Okay, technically she wasn't a member. She was a child that triggered the return of mutants to Earth-616 after the Scarlet Witch eliminated all but 198 of them in the House of M miniseries.

The X-Men protected her because of this, but also kept her at arm's length. A glimpse of the future showed her as an Antichrist figure who would destroy a million humans. So, she grew up in the pages of X-Men and other books as someone who learned to hone her powers without much assistance from the prime team members.

1 Kitty (Kate) Pryde

Kitty is probably the youngest mutant to ever join the X-Men. She wasn't more than 13 when she became a member of the team. Looking back, Kitty didn't even go through training in the New Mutants or Generation X. Her trial of fire began immediately.

Look at what happened to her one year after her introduction in Uncanny X-Men #139. She joined the team to battle Doctor Doom. She went into space to help defeat the Brood. She was a prominent figure in the "Days of Future Past" storyline. In the end, all of this, along with much more experience and tragedy over the last four decades, made her a prominent leader through all X-Men incarnations.
