Two pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe Fox films have been added to Disney+: 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine and 2005's Fantastic Four.On Twitter, Disney+ posted a list of projects that are new to the streaming service this month revealing the two movies are now available on the platform. Fantastic Four was previously on the platform along with its sequel, 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. However, the two movies left Disney+ on Dec. 1. While Rise of the Silver Surfer is still not available on the platform, 2015's much-maligned Fantastic Four reboot, which was directed by Josh Trank, is still on the streaming service.
Directed by Tim Story, Fantastic Four starred Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Jessica Alba as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm/Thing and Julian McMahon as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. The movie, which is based on Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's classic comic book creations, sees the titular team forming after a journey to space gives them superpowers. Fantastic Four made $333.5 million at the box office against a budget of between $87.5 and $100 million. However, reviews for the project were generally negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, Fantastic Four holds a 27 percent among critics.
Rise of the Silver Surfer, which was also directed by Story, picks up where the previous movie left off and sees the Fantastic Four taking on the Silver Surfer (Laurence Fishburne and Doug Jones) and Galactus. Rise of the Silver Surfer performed slightly worse commercially than its predecessor, earning only $301.9 million against a budget of $120 and $130 million. Reviews were slightly more positive, though, and Rise of the Silver Surfer currently holds a 37 percent among critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Starring Hugh Jackman reprising his role from the X-Men trilogy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine delves into the character's backstory and looks in more depth at the Weapon X program that gave the titular hero his adamantium skeleton. At the box office, X-Men Origins: Wolverine earned $373.1 million against a budget of $150 million. Critically, the movie didn't perform particularly well. Currently, the title holds a 37 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. There were initially plans for more Origins-style movies, specifically one focused on Erik Lensherr/Magneto, but those projects never came to fruition.
