Earlier this month, Marvel announced it would be launching a new X-Men Red series under its Destiny of X banner, with writer Ewing and artist Caselli at the helm. The original X-Men Red was an 11-issue series written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Mahmud Asrar, Carmen Carnero and Rogê Antônio that ran throughout the year of 2018.

The new X-Men Red series quite literally takes Marvel's mutants to the red planet. It sees "mutantkind divided over what's next for Arakko. Major players like Storm, Magneto, Sunspot, Abigail Brand, the mutants of the Great Ring and many more all have different hopes -- and fears -- regarding Arakko's uncertain future. A place of mystery, strength, and endless conflict, Arakko needs something more than just a team of heroes to defend it. Who will rise to the challenge?"

Marvel's official synopsis for issue #1 elaborates, "The mutants of Arakko spent millennia scarred by war -- but on what was once called Mars, they're learning to live in peace. Storm knows the red planet needs something greater than a queen. But Abigail Brand has other plans, along with an unstable Vulcan on her side and Cable keeping his own secrets. It's a new world… and someone has to fight for it."

The synopsis for X-Men Red #2 directly mirrors this, reading, "The mutants of Mars spent millennia worshipping war -- and on what they now call Arakko, they're keeping up their violent ways. Abigail Brand knows the red planet needs a firm ruler in charge. But Storm has other ideas, along with a broken Magneto in her corner and Sunspot making his own moves. It's a new world… and someone has to claim it."

Discussing the paired solicits in an exclusive interview with CBR, Ewing said, "[T]here are two different ideological approaches at work here. Ororo is on one side, Abigail is on the other." The writer continued, "When we first met Abigail, she was justifying the torture of Colossus. Abigail justifies a lot of things. But she's charming, and she's very stylish, so a lot of people have looked at the image she projects instead of the person she is... How that applies to X-Men Red -- Arakko is just a step along the way to the goal for Abigail Brand... She has a higher goal -- a moral goal -- and, as we're so often told, you sometimes have to make those tough choices to get there. That's what heroes do, isn't it? Make those tough choices, and then justify them."

Written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Stefano Caselli, X-Men Red #1 goes on sale April 6 from Marvel Comics, followed by issue #2 on April 27.
