Marvel's mutants have found a home free from humans and their persecution on the planet Arakko, formerly the planet Mars. But the upcoming X-Men Red will see a new war waged between mutants, as the divided inhabitants of the red planet battle for the world's uncertain future.

Written by Immortal Hulk writer Al Ewing with artwork by Stefano Caselli, Each issue of X-Men Red will explore a different question concerning the fate of Arakko's residents. Issue #1 will delve into who can save the red planet, as the likes of Storm and Abigail Brand, aided by Vulcan and Cable, decide the fate of the mutants' home. X-Men Red #2 will ask who can tame Arakko, when Magneto and Sunspot join the fray and take sides.

Ewing explained, "Mutantkind terraformed Mars, bringing a dead world back to life and changing the Marvel Universe forever... Mars is now Planet Arakko, home to an ancient mutant society that spent thousands of years facing war, imprisonment and pain - and home to Storm, who won a place of power on their ruling council." He added, "Now Arakko has a chance to find peace at last and forge their own path to the future... but there are those who'd rather see them fenced in and subjugated. Does Mars really need X-Men to save it - or can the mutants of Arakko fight for themselves?"

Caselli said, "I'm really putting all of myself in this title since I'm sure me and Al can leave a remarkable series in the X-Men universe. Working on Al's script is a pure joy, I'm like a kid on a rollercoaster: emotions, adrenaline and a sense of wonder is what I feel everyday sitting on my drawing desk." He then teased, "I'm just sorry I can't talk more about it but I'm more than sure readers will be happy and hooked from the starting point! Let me just say this: keep an eye on Storm...oh guys...Storm...."

X-Men Red takes place after the events of the 2021's Planet-Size X-Men (written by Gerry Duggan and illustrated by Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia), which saw Magneto gather a number of Omega-level mutants and transform Mars into Arakko, and what should have been a mutant paradise. On top of giving some Marvel's most powerful mutants time to shine, the one-shot also introduced several new mutants, including Lactuca the Knower, Sobunar of the Depths and Xilo.
