January 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the landmark X-Men comic book storyline "The Dark Phoenix Saga," by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, and Marvel Comics is celebrating the occasion with a line of variant covers.

Running across the current line of X-Men titles in January to commemorate the anniversary, the variants are illustrated by a group of superstar artists, showcasing iconic moments from the story. X-Men #5 will feature a variant by Kris Anka, Excalibur #5 has a variant by Philip Tan, New Mutants #5 features a variant by Juan Jose Ryp, X-Force #5 will have a variant by Russell Dauterman and Fallen Angels #5 includes a variant by Scott Williams. Spanning the pages of Uncanny X-Men #128-137, Claremont and Byrne's classic story saw the Hellfire Club confront the Children of the Atom while Jean Grey became possessed by the Phoenix Force and threatened to the entire Marvel Universe.

Following House of X and Powers of X, the X-Men line helmed by writer Jonathan Hickman officially relaunched this week with a brand-new X-Men #1 leading the family of comic titles into a bold new future while the variant covers celebrate its history.

The 40th anniversary Dark Phoenix variant covers will be featured on X-Men #5, Excalibur #5, New Mutants #5, X-Force #5 and Fallen Angels #5, all on sale in January from Marvel Comics.
