WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If...? Season 1, Episode 3, "What If... the World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?," now streaming on Disney+

While Mark Ruffalo reprised his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the most recent episode of What If...?, head writer A.C. Bradley revealed that she jokingly teased the possibility of bringing back The Incredible Hulk's Edward Norton.

"I've seen The Incredible Hulk probably three or four times," Bradley told Discussing Film, adding that she liked the movie's bottle chase sequence in its beginning. "We wanted to make sure that with all three movies we pulled iconic moments that people would recognize. So for The Incredible Hulk, it was the Culver University fight scene."

Bradley further stated that the production team wanted to use The Hulk's battle with The Abomination in Harlem were it possible, but "the Culver one [lent] itself better to the story," so they opted to use that.

"I did joke early on, 'If we can't get Ruffalo back are we going to ask Norton?' And I was told that Mark Ruffalo already agreed to do the show," she concluded. "He's a very lovely human being, and he was great. He came in, had fun, and you really can't get a better Hulk than Mark Ruffalo."

In the third episode of What If...?, "What If... the World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?," The Hulk is one of the victims of Hank Pym, who in this universe seeks revenge on SHIELD for the death of his daughter Hope van Dyne.

New episodes of What If...? stream Wednesdays on Disney+.
