There are countless ultra-powerful weapons across the Marvel Universe with the ability to change the face of the cosmos in an instant. Some are practically wish-makers that can make fantasy into reality with a mere whim, and others can control the very elements. However, there is a cost to this power.

Sometimes, a strong will can resist the temptation of such weapons, but others are more than happy to give in to the corruptive power of god weapons. Others still try and fail to resist the unholy whispers of these world-shaking weaponry, and these users can become some of the deadliest threats to the universe.

11 Faulty Super-Soldier Serum Recreations Damage The Mind

William Burnside as Captain America dropping onto a victim

There have been several attempts to recreate Abraham Erskine's Super Soldier Serum which remade sickly Steve Rogers into Captain America. One of the earliest birthed the Master Man, one of Cap's deadliest enemies. The United States government experimented on 300 African American soldiers in another attempt to remake the serum. Almost all of the test subjects died in the attempt.

Of the survivors, most were mutilated in some way. Isaiah Bradley was the most stable and healthy result, and even his mind swiftly deteriorated. Regardless, Bradley still became a hero and the first Black Captain America. By contrast, William Burnside and Jack Munroe became the "official" new Captain America and Bucky with another faulty Super-Soldier Serum recreation. This serum turned Burnside and Munroe into cruel, violent, and unstable individuals. Another more recent failed attempt produced the villainous "Anti-Captain America."

10 The Serpent Crown Is A Powerful Weapon That Overtakes The Mind

Namor donning the Serpent Crown in Atlantis

The Serpent Crown is a creation of ancient Lemuria and was intended to grant its wearer the powers of the Elder God known as Set. The Serpent Crown has popped up several times across Marvel history, coming into the possession of Namor, Conan the Barbarian, and Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. The Serpent Crown and the villain known as Overmind also led to a cross-dimensional battle between the Avengers and the Squadron Supreme.

What the Serpent Crown actually does for its user has been left vague. It grants some kind of power while whispering dark temptations to its wearer. There have been variations of the Serpent Crown revealed in recent years, including the Crown of Tentacles, the Thorned Crown, and the Wyrm Crown.

9 The Goblin Formula Drives Its Victims Into Insanity

Green Goblin

Norman Osborn's proprietary serum, the Goblin Formula is a substance that can grant great strength and durability to those who use it. Unfortunately, it often comes at the price of one's sanity.

Norman Osborn was never a paragon of decency even before the Goblin Formula, but the formula did corrupt Harry Osborn, Lily Hollister, and Carly Cooper. Harry became the Green Goblin for a time, Lily Hollister took up the title of Menace, and Carly Cooper became "Monster."

8 Ultimate Thor's Mjolnir Turned Volstagg Into A Rampaging Barbarian

Volstagg as the War Thor bringing down his hammer

After a series of catastrophes on Earth-1610 (the Ultimate Universe), the Mjolnir of that world's Thor landed in Earth-616 (the mainstream Marvel Universe). The Odinson briefly sought to claim it, but ultimately decided that the hammer does not make the man.

Volstagg eventually found the hammer and picked it up, becoming the War Thor. He went on a rampage and had to be stopped by Jane Foster (who was the Mighty Thor at the time). This hammer was destroyed by the Mangog, but Jane briefly reforged the hammer to help Thor battle Malekith during the War of the Realms.

7 All-Black The Necrosword Heightened Gorr's Viciousness And Brutality

Gorr The God Butcher attacking Thor

Gorr was not an evil man when he watched his family die one-by-one on his nameless planet. He was always taught to pray to the gods for salvation, but salvation never came to Gorr – until All-Black the Necrosword landed on his planet.

All-Black was the first symbiote created by Knull, God of the Void. Gorr claimed the weapon, and its dark power provoked Gorr to not only kill his own gods but to become the slayer of all gods. As the God-Butcher, Gorr then sought to wipe out all deities from across time and space. At the end of the universe, he was even ready to slay what remained of the sentient mortals in a last attempt to kill Thor, God of Thunder.

6 The Ultimate Nullifier Is So Powerful That Its Wielder Can Barely Control It

The Ultimate Nullifier floating in stasis

The Ultimate Nullifier in itself has no means to corrupt its wielder. However, the power and scope of the Nullifier are so great that it is as easy for its holder to exterminate all life in existence as it is for them to destroy the intended target.

Uatu the Watcher gave the Ultimate Nullifier to Mister Fantastic during Galactus' first invasion of Earth. Reed was aware that using the Nullifier could likely kill himself and the planet as well, but it was the only chance he had to repel the Devourer of Worlds. The weapon temporarily killed Quasar when he attempted to put a stop to Adam Magus during the Infinity War story by Jim Starlin and Ron Lim. Since then, Doctor Doom used it to wipe out an entire alternate reality after meeting that universe's version of himself.

5 The Golden Sentry Serum Gave Birth To The Void

The Void Sentry Robert Reynolds

There have been several conflicting origins given to the Sentry, but one consistent element in all tellings is the Golden Sentry Serum created by "The Professor." This serum told Bob Reynolds into the Golden Guardian of Good, aka the Sentry. However, it also turned Bob into the Void, a supernatural godlike being dedicated to death and destruction.

There have been theories that the Void predates the Sentry by millennia, and there are others that it is a recent godlike invader into the Mainstream Marvel Universe that rewrote reality to give itself a backstory – thus creating the Golden Sentry Serum and Bob Reynolds himself. Whatever the case, the Golden Sentry Serum is part of what binds Bob Reynolds to the Void.

4 The Black Vortex Gives Ultimate Power At A Price

The Black Vortex surrounded by the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy

The Black Vortex is a mirror-like item that transforms those who stare at it into their ultimate potential. Star-Lord's father, J'Son of Spartax, sought to use the Vortex to retake the throne of the Spartoi Empire. The Guardians of the Galaxy, a team of X-Men, Nova, and Captain Marvel allied to stop this from happening.

The Black Vortex was used on several individuals at this time. It corrupted Gamora, Beast, and Angel into trying to forcibly use it on as many people as possible. Ronan the Accuser used its power to try and defend his homeworld of Hala. Cyclops, Groot, Iceman, and Kate Pryde ultimately used the Vortex to stop J'Son and his "Slaughter Lords." The Black Vortex has the potential to corrupt those who stare into it, but it doesn't do so to everyone it seems.

3 The Symbiotes Used To Make Their Wearers Into Vicious Predators

Venom snarling on the side of a building.

While it has since been revealed that symbiotes aren't innately evil, their earliest appearances showed the potential of a symbiote to corrupt its host. The Venom symbiote almost turned Spider-Man into a villain, and encouraged Eddie Brock's worst instincts during his earliest days as Venom. The Planet of the Symbiotes event by David Michelinie and Dave Hoover showed a full force of symbiotes seeking to take over Earth.

A later invasion that took place in New Avengers by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu reinforces that theory. Agent Venom and Toxin's struggles to be a hero also implied innate malice to symbiotes. This has since been disproven by the revelation of Knull, the fact that incompatible hosts can psychologically damage a symbiote, and the heroics of Flash Thompson and Eddie Brock as Venom.

2 The Darkhold Will Warp The Mind Of The Reader

Doctor Doom casts a spell from the Darkhold in Marvel Comics

The Darkhold is a book of spells created by the Elder Chaos God known as Chthon. It has been passed down through the centuries and was the inspiration for the Marvel counterpart of the Necronomicon. It has caused all manner of havoc during its existence, and it has been in the possession of the likes of Doctor Doom and the High Evolutionary. The spells in the Darkhold are dark and dangerous enough that merely perceiving them can fray the mind, and it has turned hordes of unwitting victims into devoted cultists of Chthon.

1 The Phoenix Force Almost Always Overtakes The Mind Of Its Host

The Phoenix Force soaring

Like the symbiotes, the Phoenix Force is a living being. It can grant power unimaginable to whoever it inhabits, and it seems to have a preference for telepaths and telekinetics. When Jean Grey was inhabited by the Phoenix Force, she had enough power to wipe out planets, and the Phoenix coaxed her into doing so.

Five shards of the Phoenix persuaded five X-Men into trying to wipe out the Avengers and take over the Earth. Most recently, the Phoenix has also held a tournament on Earth to determine the identity of its next Host, and the ensuing battle sent shockwaves throughout the superhero community.
