Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes may be remastered, or at the very least re-released on modern hardware, in the future.

During a recent interview with GamerHubTV, studio head of Digital Eclipse, a development team responsible for several recent ports of classic Disney and Capcom games, said that talks were underway regarding Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Mike Mika, speaking to the recent #FREEMVC2 online movement, said, "The reaction to [#FREEMVC2] was incredible. I know that both Disney and Capcom have seen that loud and clear and we’ve begun some discussions on that right now."

In an attempt to generate interest in a modern port, fighting game content creator Maximillian Dood started an online movement known as #FREEMVC2. The cause grew in strength, bolstered by the fighting game community, as Mika notes that his emails were often flooded with #FREEMVC2 sentiments.

While both companies are noticing the demand for the game, Mika is also quick to note that the decision to create a new version doesn't lie with Digital Eclipse. "We’re trying to see how far we can go but ultimately, at the end of the day, it’s really not up to us. It's owned... parts of [Marvel vs. Capcom 2] are owned by two different really... large entities that have a lot of reasons why they'd want to or not want to do some of that," said Mika.

"All we can really do is make the best case possible and try to make it easy for them and see if they're interested," continued Mika, going on to say that both Disney and Capcom are very aware of the widespread fan interest in a modern remaster.

Digital Eclipse is no stranger to porting classic games to new platforms. Recently, the team worked with Capcom on the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and the Mega Man Legacy Collection. As for Disney, the studio developed Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King. The company's most recent release is Space Jam: A New Legacy - The Game.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is widely considered to be one of the best fighting games of all time. Originally released in 2000, the game launched for the SEGA Dreamcast but has been ported to consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. While a mobile version of the game is available, fans are currently unable to play it on any modern hardware; the game is inaccessible on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5. While it's possible to get it working on PC, there are currently no official (and legal) channels to do so.
