Marvel has been telling amazing stories for decades, with its amazing roster of heroes anchoring some of the most beloved stories in all of comics. However, without great villains, none of those stories would work. Luckily, the Marvel Universe has some of the most amazing villains in all of comics, dangerous and powerful foes that have been challenging the heroes for decades, helping to create some memorable battles.

Some of these villains have names that perfectly illustrate how dangerous they are, while others have names that don't exactly gel with just how drastic of a threat they can be. The irony of this is amazing- they may sound like pushovers but some of them are the deadliest around.

10 Blob Is Way More Dangerous Than He Sounds or Looks

Blob

Blob has one of the worst names in all comics but that doesn't mean he deserves a bum rep. His powers are actually quite formidable- he's super strong, pretty much indestructible, and can control his mass to such an extent that he can't be moved unless he wants to be. Blob can easily fight his way through all kinds of heroes.

The Blob is actually a match for heavy hitters like the Hulk or Thor but his lackluster name has held him back. Trifling with the Blob is a huge mistake- he can take down most heroes who he fights against without much fuss.

9 Ultron Is Not A Name That Inspires Fear

The villainous Ultron construct seeks to destroy all human life

It's plain to see that Hank Pym didn't expect his android creation Ultron to ever turn into the powerful threat he would. Ultron, as far as names go, isn't exactly the scariest name ever and it doesn't at all fit the mad android, who has committed atrocities in his mission to destroy all human life.

With as much as Ultron hates humanity and his father, it's surprising he hasn't changed his name. It's not bad but it just doesn't fit a near-indestructible, genocidal robot who can slap around gods like Thor with impunity. However, his kind of lame name doesn't stop him from being one of the most deadly foes the Avengers have faced.

8 Mr. Sinister's Name Is Frankly Ridiculous

Nathaniel Essex from Marvel Comics

Mr. Sinister has the kind of name that one would expect from an old sci-fi serial villain of the '40s and '50s, the kind of bad guy who made grandiose plans that never succeeded. Honestly, he kind of looks that way as well- like a fairly ridiculous, cliche bad guy. However, he's spent years proving that he's anything but a joke with his evil deeds.

Sinister's powers, perfected by years of genetic tinkering, have made him a match for even the most powerful X-Men teams and his genetically modified underlings have been responsible for all manner of atrocities at his urging. Sinister has overcome the evil cliche nature of his name to become a true threat.

7 The Void's Name Belies Just How Dangerous He Can Be

Annihilation The Sentry The Void 1

The Void is one of the most dangerous beings on the planet, even if his name is pretty vanilla. The dark side of the hero the Sentry, the Void's powers are amazing. On his own, he's proven able to smack around some of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe.

His name seems like the name of a second or third string villain, not a potential extinction-level event. The greatest heroes of the Marvel Universe have fallen to the power of the Void and his name is whispered in hushed awe and fear.

6 Baron Zemo Doesn't Sound Like One Of The Greatest Villainous Masterminds In The Marvel Universe

Baron Zemo holds a sword and stands by a canon while a soldier is shot beside him. His arms are outstretched and he wears his purple mask.

Baron Zemo sounds like a cackling mad scientist in a nineteenth-century novel and while those types of villains can be pretty scary, it leaves something to be desired when it comes to battling the greatest heroes on Earth.

However, Baron Zemo has proven he has the villainous bona fides- as leader of the Masters of Evil, he's defeated the Avengers, almost took over the world with the Thunderbolts, and comes up with more villainous schemes than most bad guys could ever dream of. He's also a formidable hand-to-hand combatant and just generally one of the most dangerous villains around.

5 Magneto's Name Doesn't Get Across The Fact That He Is The Most Dangerous Mutant On Earth

Magneto using his powers

Magneto is one of the greatest villains in the history of the Marvel Universe, even if he's not always a villain. He's one of the most powerful beings on the planet- his magnetic powers give him the ability to end human civilization pretty much whenever he sees fit. However, his name leaves something to be desired and that's being nice about it.

It gets the point across that he has magnetic powers but also doesn't really give one an idea of just how dangerous he is. Magneto can destroy a city in the amount of time it takes a person to eat dinner and that's only if he takes it slow. His name doesn't give that impression at all, but luckily, everyone knows to be scared of him.

4 Bullseye's Name Doesn't Give One An Idea Of How Dangerous He Really Is

Bullseye

Bullseye definitely sounds like the name of a marksman but it's honestly pretty innocent. It just implies that the bearer of the name is an expert at hitting a target. Now, yes, Bullseye is an expert at that sort of thing but that's only half of it. He's deadly with anything he gets his hands on and is a tough enough fighter to give even superhumans a run for their money.

He's also one of the most insane villains in the Marvel Universe, a man who loves to hurt people more than anything else in the world. His name is innocuous but his reputation and actions are anything but.

3 Doctor Octopus's Name Is Silver Age Cheese

Doctor Octopus

Doctor Octopus has proven to be one of Spider-Man's most dangerous villains. Using his powerful robotic arms, he's bedeviled the Wall-Crawler and other heroes many times over the years, even killing his arachnid arch-nemesis. This is a really big deal, as few villains ever get to take out their foe like he has.

However, his name is pretty dull. One can tell he was created in the more innocent times of the Silver Age, when on the nose naming of villains was more prevalent. Sure, it gets the point across- he's a scientist with eight limbs (counting his robotic arms and his natural arms and legs) but it's not at all an intimidating name.

2 Mystique's Name Is Cool But It Downplays How Deadly She Is

x-men-6-mystique-header

In a lot of ways, Mystique's name works for her. It sounds exactly like the name of someone who is a master spy that can sneak around with impunity. It's also a pretty cool name but it implies a level of trickery to her that really downplays just how dangerous in a fight she can be.

Mystique is one of the deadliest villains the X-Men have ever faced, hands down. This is a woman who can go toe to toe with Wolverine. Everyone who knows anything about her is scared of her and while her name is cool it doesn't really get across how thoroughly she's can wreck who or whatever she comes into contact with.

1 Green Goblin's Name Undercuts The Mastermind That He Is

Green Goblin

Green Goblin is yet another victim of Silver Age naming conventions. Norman Osborn chose the most on-the-nose name possible for himself because of his costume when he decided to become a villain and while it's not a bad name, it definitely doesn't do the villain justice. Green Goblin has proven to be a danger to not just Spider-Man but any he faces.

Green Goblin has proven to be a thorn in the side of Spider-Man like few others and it's more intimidating just to call him Norman Osborn than Green Goblin, which is honestly a kind of boring name that doesn't really do him justice at all.
