There's still a lot of speculation surrounding Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and in most cases, X marks the spot. Fans are desperate to see how the movie will play into the presence of mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, this will likely also relate to Scarlet Witch, who's also in the movie. This has already made many believe that some variant of the storyline of House of M will be adapted, but it could reach back farther than just the MCU.

If Wanda's powers had anything to do with why the MCU doesn't currently have mutants, it could also explain the lack of Avengers in another universe. In other words, Wanda not only "created" the current MCU, but she's also responsible for the existence of the Fox X-Men movie universe. Here's how this would explain continuity going all the way back to that original 2000 Bryan Singer film.

Why Aren't There Mutants In the MCU?

X-Men-2000

In the traditional Marvel comic books, both Wanda Maximoff and her brother Pietro are the mutant children of Magneto. They're even initially introduced as part of his evil Brotherhood of Mutants, though they later join the Avengers and fight alongside Captain America and Hawkeye. Of course, this hasn't quite been their history in the MCU, where Wanda and Pietro are instead the results of Sokovian experiments.

Likewise, there has been no mentioning or even mere suggestion of anything involving mutants in this universe. This of course stems from the movie right issues that had plagued Marvel's biggest property for so long. Due to selling their movie rights back in the '90s, Marvel Studios did not have the rights to use the X-Men or mutants as a concept. Instead, 20th Century Fox handled the mutants, producing movies for them from 2000 to 2020. Currently, Marvel's parent company Disney owns Fox after purchasing them a few years ago, meaning that the X-Men are back home again.

This real world legal entanglement has muddied the waters with which Marvel characters Marvel Studios can use. Despite these setbacks, Marvel can use this as a meta explanation for why the X-Men are in a different world. In doing so, this could not only "adapt" House of M, but also turn one of the MCU's biggest heroes into perhaps its greatest villains ever.

Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

As mentioned, Scarlet Witch in the comics is the daughter of Magneto, and perhaps that had originally been the case with the MCU version, as well. Seeing both the actions of her father and the persecution foisted upon mutants as a whole, Scarlet Witch may have used her powers to rewrite reality and give herself a new start. This time, she and her brother were seemingly not Magneto's children or even mutants at all, and instead they lived in a world where superhumans were comparatively worshiped.

On the other hand, Magneto (the version played by Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen) and other mutants lived in a world that despised them and treated them like second-class citizens. This new reality might suggest that it wasn't just Magneto, but mutants in general, that seemingly wronged Wanda, causing her to vengefully remake reality into a world where they're scorned and mistreated. This might explain why even Professor X, who seems to be in the trailer, may be an antagonist for Multiverse of Madness.

If this is the case, then Wanda truly brought about "no more mutants" just like in the comics, at least for one universe. That also makes the Fox X-Men movies a sort of cruel joke on mutantkind. Being able to escape into the happiness of the MCU and away from mutant persecution also explains both why she opposes Tony Stark's actions in Captain America: Civil War and why losing Vision and her new family was so traumatic for her. Thus, it was justified why Tony would look to her as dangerous, as she's a far bigger threat to mutants on the big screen than the Sentinels or Senator Kelly ever were.
