The fan-favorite sentient tree Groot has been performed using motion-capture technology by different actors in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Vin Diesel, who also provides his voice, did the honors in the first installment, while Sean Gunn had that role in the second. However, in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, the role of Teen Groot, who debuted in a post-credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, will be motion-captured by Terry Notary.
If that name sounds familiar, it’s because the actor served as the the titular giant ape in Kong: Skull Island, and played Rocket in War for the Planet of the Apes. While promoting his recently released movie The Square, Notary confirmed he'll be Groot in his awkward teen years in Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War.
"It’s really, really fun," he told Yahoo! Movies UK. "I can’t say too much about him, but he’s coming of age, so you’ll see the teenager find a mentor to look up to and to model himself after. The character’s great, and the films are going to be great."
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie. The film opens May 4, 2018.
