Marvel Teases Fantastic Four Relaunch with an Unnamed Creative Team

Speaking at SDCC, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski said David Pepose will be taking over the Fantastic Four series for two issues before the title relaunches later this year. Marvel has not yet announced the creative team behind the new series, but promised more announcements to come at a later date.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four -- oftentimes referred to as Marvel's First Family -- first appeared in 1961's The Fantastic Four #1. The team is made up of Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards, the Invisible Woman/Sue Storm, the Thing/Ben Grimm and the Human Torch/Johnny Storm, though others have also subbed in for members in the past, such as She-Hulk. The four heroes gained their powers from a cosmic radiation storm in outer space and have an extensive rogues' gallery of villains, including Doctor Doom, Galactus, Namor and several others.

Marvel recently wrapped an extensive "Reckoning War" storyline involving the Fantastic Four, which was written by Dan Slott with art by Marco Checchetto. The event saw the team cross paths with the Reckoning, an alien race trying to cause an intergalactic war. The event ended with Uatu creating a new corner of the Marvel Universe called "the Borderlands," which a recently reborn Galactus and Silver Surfer then head out to explore in a quest for "knowledge."

Following the events of the Reckoning War, Fantastic Four #46 will introduce Reed Richards' sister. Releasing on Aug. 24, the synopsis for the issue reads, "'Family First'! Not a dream. Not a hoax. This is real. Thanks to the knowledge of the Watchers, the lost daughter of Nathaniel Richards has been found. It’s time to finally meet the mysterious sister of Reed Richards. But is it time to welcome her into the family? It’s a day of amazing adventures both in her world, and in the world of the Fantastic Four. Guest-starring Namor, King of Atlantis."

Marvel's new Fantastic Four run begins in November 2022.
