Marvel is spinning a new Spider-Man and Venom "Dark Web" development.
Marvel revealed a teaser poster for a new "Dark Web" Spider-Man and Venom development. While not immediately clear if "Dark Web" will be a new series or crossover storyline, the publisher said that more details would be revealed in the upcoming Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom issue that releases on May 7.
Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom #1 comes from writers Zeb Wells, Al Ewing and Ram V, with art by John Romita Jr. and Bryan Hitch. Releasing in time for Spider-Man's 60th anniversary, the issue will see the beginning of a new storyline in Wells and Romita Jr.'s Amazing Spider-Man series. Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom #1 will also set the stage for further developments in Ewing, Ram V and Hitch's current Venom run.
Spider-Man and Venom have a long history with one another. While Spider-Man first appeared in the Marvel Universe in 1962's Amazing Fantasy #15, Venom made his debut as a living alien costume worn by Peter Parker in 1984's The Amazing Spider-Man #252 following the "Secret Wars" storyline. Upon wearing the black symbiote costume for a time, Peter eventually recognizes its sinister nature and separates himself from it in Amazing Spider-Man #258. The symbiote goes on to merge with Eddie Brock and becomes a major villain to Peter, with Venom then making his first full appearance in 1988's The Amazing Spider-Man #300.
Wells and Romita Jr.'s Amazing Spider-Man relaunch begins on April 27. The new series will see Peter struggle to find an ally after nearly everyone turns him away for reasons that are currently unknown. The synopsis for the first issue reads, "WHAT DID SPIDER-MAN DO?! Peter’s on the outs with the FF. He’s on the outs with the Avengers. He’s on the outs with Aunt May! No one wants to see Spider-Man – except for Doctor Octopus. Ock’s on Spider-Man’s tail and the Master Planner has something truly terrible planned for when he gets his tentacles on Spidey. All that, and what does Tombstone have planned? Just in time for Spider-Man’s 60th Anniversary, a new volume of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN begins, and 2022 is going to be the biggest year for Spider-Man EVER! Don’t believe us? We brought John Romita Jr. back JUST FOR THIS!"
