Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has seen a multitude of positive responses from both critics and audiences who attended a special screening of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Praise is largely aimed at the movie's action sequences and family dynamic, all of which reportedly adds to the shared film universe.

The latest entry in the MCU centers on the titular Shang-Chi and his conflict with the legacy of his father, the Mandarin, also known as Wenwu. Actor Tony Leung described the supervillain as "a man with a history, who craves to be loved," as well as a "a sociopath, a narcissist, a bigot." Commenting on Leung's performance, director Destin Daniel Cretton previously said, "A character like Wenwu could have easily been a one-dimensional villain with no heart. Tony opened this character up [so] this is an antagonist who has a deep ability to love."

Aside from star Simu Liu in the titular role and Tony Leung as the villain, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng'er Zhang and Ronny Chieng. The upcoming feature film will also see the return of more than a few familiar faces, such as Abomination and the sorcerer Wong. Details of their involvement in Shang-Chi's story have not been released. However, both the Incredible Hulk villain and fan-favorite Doctor Strange character have briefly featured in virtually all the teaser clips and trailers Marvel Studios has released for Shang-Chi.

Additionally, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will see the return of Sir Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, who was last seen in the short film, All Hail the King. The short confirmed that Aldrich Killian appropriated the Mandarin name, as well as that of the Ten Rings organization, as part of the elaborate plot to hide his destructive Extremis experiments in Iron Man 3. It's uncertain how Shang-Chi will address the issue.

Where other recent MCU films have seen both theatrical and streaming releases, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is scheduled to premiere exclusively in theaters on Sept. 3.
