Everyone wants to have superpowers. People want to be like Superman or Captain Marvel and have the ability to fly around or run at super-speed or even lift cars with ease.  Of course, not all superpowers are created equal. There are some powers that people think they want, until they realize the trouble that comes with them.

The Marvel Universe is filled with heroes with powers like that. Unlike DC Comics, most of the time Marvel superheroes looked at their powers as a problem just as much as they could be used to help others. Luckily, these heroes rarely cross the line into villainy as the consequences could be devastating. But living with the downsides of these highly coveted powers is enough to drive anyone over the edge.

10 No One Wants The Ability To Read People’s Minds

X Professor X

Telepathy is by far one of the most useful powers in the Marvel universe, but no one would actually want it. The way Marvel telepaths make it sound, they sometimes can’t help picking up surface thoughts, like accidentally hearing parts of loud conversations.

It’s unpleasant enough knowing what people are willing to say, never mind what they’re not willing to say. And even worse is that even in silent places, any place with a ton of people would never allow a telepath any peace. They can hear everyone’s thoughts, so without the ability to completely shut everyone out, this would be a miserable experience for anyone.

9 The Ability To Control The Weather Would Cause More Problems Than Solve Them

There are many people with the ability to control and alter the weather as a person sees fit in the Marvel Universe, but mostly everyone just thinks of Storm. Storm was worshipped for having the power to control the weather, to bring rain whenever she saw fit. But the weather system is actually far more delicate and interconnected than most people are aware of.

Trying to forcibly change an area’s eco-system would have far and wide-ranging consequences. In the end, learning everything one could potentially be responsible for would make having the powers not worth it.

8 The Thing’s Durability Is Nice But Uncontrollable

For the most part, super-strength is something that everyone would want. But the durability and super-strength that comes from being The Thing? Benjamin J. Grimm is perhaps one of the nicest guys in the Marvel Universe this side of Captain America, but it stands in contrast to his looks.

He’s become a literal being made of rocks. Aside from questions about the obvious like how he showers or goes to the restroom, everything about Ben’s life is harder than it needs to be. From falling in love to finding a decent set of clothes, when you can’t cut off that rocky form life gets a lot harder.

7 Sonic Screams Are A Power That Would Never Have A Practical Use

Father Daughter Banshee Siryn

Banshee and Siryn are two mutants with the power of sonic screams. They can use their vocal cords to shatter objects and even fly around at the speed of sound, and they're protected by creating a sonic shield as they scream. This is such an overtly “superhero” power.

With an ability like this, one is stuck either fighting crime or spending the rest of their life speaking in a whisper to avoid destroying your home.

6 The Ability To Drain Powers Like Rogue Would Keep One From Being Able To Touch Anyone

Rogue X-Men Anna Marie

What is life without human contact? That’s a question for Anna-Marie, a woman whose powers kicked in the first time she kissed a boy. From then on, Rogue would have to spend the rest of her life avoiding physical contact unless she wanted to drain their life force.

Rogue could drain not only someone’s life but their memories as well, meaning sometimes she couldn’t even figure out where she began and where the person she absorbed ended.

5 The Access To Gamma Powers Comes With Boundless Rage

Being the Hulk seems like it would be cool, right? And yet, it’s brought everyone who ever wielded those powers nothing but anguish and problems. Yes, Bruce Banner is something of a sad sack with or without his abilities. But it’s not just down to Bruce. The gamma powers have always made every user’s life problematic.

This is true even for the most well-adjusted Hulks, like Jennifer Walters and Amadeus Cho. Amadeus Cho learned that controlling his anger was harder with the Hulk powers, and he was a danger to everyone around him when he lost control. Jennifer has become more unstable, to the point where for a while she didn’t even want to use her powers. And that’s all without talking about the fact that apparently gamma powers connect their users to an alternate dimension that makes them functionally immortal.

4 Phasing Means Destroying Any Piece Of Tech Someone Is Close To

Kitty Pryde was one of the youngest X-Men up to that point.

Kitty Pryde has had the ability to phase since the 80s when she was first introduced. At the time, it felt like a pretty cool defensive power. But it’s another superhero ability that doesn’t have a lot of practical use in day-to-day situations.

She also can’t phase through any form of electronics without destroying it, and that’s something that would be far more dangerous today than it was in the ’80s when information technology wasn’t nearly as prevalent. Imagine using how many laptops and cell phones she'd run through now.

3 Cyclops Can’t Actually Control His Optic Blasts So His Entire World Is Red

Cyclops Pool Billiards

Scott Summers’ powers certainly look cool, and he’s had some of the best outfits of anyone else on the X-Men. But to begin with, his powers can’t actually be controlled unless he wears a special set of glasses made of ruby quartz. Otherwise, anything he looks at will be destroyed.

And even with the glasses, it’s a miserable experience because his entire world is filtered through red. Constantly being at risk of wiping out anything someone looks at because they lost their glasses sounds like a hard life.

2 Saying Bomb Nails Doesn’t Even Sound Cool

Marvel Boy Guardians of the Galaxy 1

Noh-Varr has a collection of abilities that make him a very dangerous superhero. But then he also has some abilities that were clearly added just to make him seem more alien in nature. Specifically, Noh-Varr can extend his fingernails and use them as grenades. The overall effect is cool, but this is the type of ability that no one would ever actually brag about.

It just sounds gross—do longer fingernails create stronger explosions? Is there a limit? Can it be controlled? So many questions for a power no one would want to ever use in everyday situations.

1 Jubilee’s Sparklers Are Capable Of Destroying Matter But Usually Only Look Like Fireworks

Jubilee Using Lumikinetic Explosive Light Blasting:

Emma Frost once described Jubilee’s powers as “destroying matter on a subatomic level.” But Jubilee rarely ever displays that ability, and if she did it’d be probably one of the more dangerous powers that one wouldn’t use without having absolute control over them. However, most of the time her powers are just used to create sparks that can blind a person.

What’s the point of a power like this? It’d be neat for party tricks, but that would get old fast. After that, a person would just be giggled at for this useless ability, much like Jubilee was in the late ’90s and early 2000s before she became a fashion icon.
