Marvel is teasing "major" 3D movie experiences are soon on the way.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said during Walt Disney Company's presentation at CinemaCon on April 27 that some "major" 3D offerings are coming soon. While not much else is known about what the offerings will include, Feige also said Ryan Coogler was working "very hard" on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and that new "storytelling tools" could shape the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). "In the next 10 years with existing characters and new characters and new storytelling tools with the multiverse, anything can happen,” Feige said.
Marvel Studios has released a number of its theatrical films with 3D offerings before. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes out on May 2 with RealD 3D and IMAX 3D viewing options. Spider-Man: No Way Home also had 3D viewing options, among many others. In December, Disney will put out Avatar 2 in 3D, IMAX 3D and several other formats.
Watching films in 3D started gaining popularity around the early 1950s with movies such as Warner Brother's House of Wax (which was also the first 3D movie to feature stereophonic sound), Columbia's Man in the Dark, a large number of Vincent Price horror pictures and many others. Interest in 3D started to see a decrease around 1953; however, it saw a resurgence during the 2000s when high-end IMAX and Disney-themed venues began opening. Films such as Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl in 3-D, The Polar Express and many more all intensified the interest, with James Cameron's Avatar bringing about a new wave when it released in RealD 3D, Dolby 3D, XpanD 3D, MasterImage 3D, and IMAX 3D in 2009.
As more and more films began to release in 3D following Avatar, audience interest in the format gradually started to decline; although, Disney still premiered a large number of their films in 3D in the following years, such as 2012's The Avengers, 2019's The Lion King and countless others. Fans can also watch movies in 3D at home with Blu-ray 3D releases and other options.
Also at CinemaCon, Marvel premiered extended footage of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that shows a scene in which Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) walks down a wedding aisle only to be interrupted by a one-eyed octopus monster, who Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Wong (Benedict Wong) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) then have to fight.
