Scott Derrickson, who directed "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and the July-debuting "Deliver Us From Evil," is reportedly Marvel Studios' choice to direct the "Doctor Strange" film. Variety states that that talks are still early but a "deal should be struck shortly," while The Hollywood Reporter is more definitive, writing that Derrickson has "signed on."

Marvel has yet to make an official announcement and declined comment on Variety's report, but the director certainly seemed to confirm it via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon:

Along with his directorial resume, Derrickson's writing credits include "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," "Sinister" and "Deliver Us From Evil." A "Doctor Strange" film hasn't yet been scheduled, but it's been reported to be in some phase of early development for years. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated in January 2013 that a Doctor Strange film would "Definitely" be a part of the franchise's upcoming "Phase Three."

Doctor Strange was created by comic book legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and first appeared in 1963's "Strange Tales" #110. The character's civilian identity, Stephen Strange, was mentioned in this spring's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

"We're definitely working very hard on trying to figure that out and get the right team in place on that," Feige told CBR News. "His mention was less about, 'We're going to announce it soon, let's put it out there!' and more about, 'No, he's definitely in the MCU.'"

Another upcoming Marvel Studios film, "Ant-Man," appears to still be searching for a director, following Edgar Wright's departure late last month. "Ant-Man" is scheduled for release on July 17, 2015.
