With Chris Evans remaining coy on whether or not his Steve Rogers/Captain America will die or retire in Avengers 4 next May, fans are already speculating who could don the shield. However, if WWE superstar and actor John Cena has his way, his time could be now to become Marvel's star-spangled Avenger on the big screen.

Cena posted a cryptic image to his Instagram with no text written, displaying an image of Captain America's battle-damaged shield that was last seen in Captain America: Civil War. It's worth noting, though, that Cena has made a similar tease in the past about HBO's Watchmen series, so this post could be pure fun; maybe something meant to garner fan support for a possible run at the role, or nothing at all.

Then again, given Cena's motto of "Hustle. Loyalty. Respect" and his constant love for the military service and America on the whole when he's in the ring, Cena might well be on the casting block, as he's also a huge fan of all things geek, especially comics.

As it stands, though, while Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) are set for their own Disney series, theorists have pegged either to wield the shield as Rogers' successor, just like the comics. So, if Cena does end up getting the role, it's certainly a move from Marvel Studios none of us would have seen coming.
