The official cover for the upcoming encyclopedia book Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline has been released.

First spotted on Amazon, the cover showcases several of the shared universe's most important characters -- Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Simu Liu's Shang-Chi, Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, Josh Brolin's Thanos, Brie Larson's Captain Marvel and Anthony Mackie's Captain America -- separated by the orange magical sparks commonly associated with the MCU's sorcerers. The cover design also reveals that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will provide the book's foreword.

Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline

The new Marvel Studios encyclopedia was announced in December 2022 and is described as "the definitive, filmmaker-endorsed guide" to the MCU and its timeline that "will answer the biggest questions: what happened, when, where, and why." Since the launch of the MCU in 2008 with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, the timeline has rapidly expanded to cover multiple worlds, timelines and characters, with the book's summary assuring readers that they will be able to "follow the entire story of the MCU from before the Big Bang to the Blip and beyond. Along the way, learn more about the evolution of the Iron Man armors, the hunt for the Infinity Stones, and the formation of the Multiverse."

The MCU's Timeline Has Rapidly Expanded

Before the release of Avengers: Endgame, MCU films were typically set in the year they were released, which allowed fans to easily keep track of the chronological order. However, Endgame -- released in 2019 -- featured a five-year time jump that set the film's events in 2023. Since the start of Phase 4, Marvel Studios hasn't been as transparent with fans about when its Disney+ series and theatrical films are set, leaving fans searching for clues and Easter eggs to help them narrow down a calendar year. There is an official timeline order available to fans on Disney+, but it only orders the films chronologically and does not divulge additional details like when the film is set and if it takes place during other films. Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline finally looks to clear up any confusion by presenting a detailed account of every major event that has so far taken place in the MCU.

With Phase 5 of the MCU set to kick off this February with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, a new edition of Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline will likely need to be released every few years to update the timeline as future films and series expand and fill in gaps in the MCU's history. Other highly-anticipated Phase 5 projects set to shake up the MCU's timeline include The Marvels, Captain America: New World Order, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Secret Invasion, Daredevil: Born Again, Thunderbolts, Blade, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Ironheart and Echo as well as new seasons of What If...? and Loki.

Currently available for pre-order, Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline will be released on Sept. 5.
