Actor Alfred Molina was teased by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige after Molina spoiled his reprisal of Doctor Octopus Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Feige spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the recent Marvel Studios series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, namely the surprising cameo from Seinfeld and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. "That was a dream come true for us," Feige said about the cameo. "We are lucky that these amazing talents are joining the [Marvel Cinematic Universe]. Not the other way around." When asked if fans would see Louis Dreyfus' contessa again, Feige said with a smirk, "You should ask Alfred Molina."
Molina's involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home was the subject of several reports from 2020. However, Feige alluded to an interview earlier this year where Molina spoiled his return as Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus in the upcoming MCU film. "When we were shooting it, we were all under orders not to talk about it, because it was supposed to be some great big secret," Molina said. "But, you know, it's all over the internet. I actually described myself as the worst kept secret in Hollywood!" He also revealed that he would be de-aged in the film to portray Doctor Octopus, a la Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson in Captain America: Civil War and Captain Marvel, respectively.
Molina first played Doc Ock in Sam Raimi's 2004 film Spider-Man 2, which ended with his character sacrificing himself and his unstable nuclear reactor by drowning in New York City's East River. Doc Ock isn't the only non-MCU Spider-Man character to return for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Actor Jamie Foxx seemingly confirmed his reprisal of The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Electro in a since-deleted Instagram post. Other rumored appearances included Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane Watson from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man series.
The largest rumors surround the returns of other Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, Garfield gave a pretty definitive response that he would not be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home. When pressed further for a clear yes/no answer, he vaguely responded that "[he] did not get a call."
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx as Electro. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 17.
