The original Black Panther made history at the 91st Academy Awards by becoming the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture. The film also received nods for Original Song, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing, and it won for Production Design, Ruth E. Carter's Costume Design and Ludwig Göransson's Original Score. As one of the few Best Picture nominees populated by a predominantly Black cast, many saw Black Panther's success on the awards circuit as a significant step forward for representation in film, especially in the wake of 2015's #OscarsSoWhite campaign.

Black Panther's Groundbreaking Success

In addition to its critical success, Black Panther was the second-highest-grossing film of 2018 (and the ninth-highest of all time), pulling in nearly $1.4 billion worldwide. To date, it is also the highest-grossing film directed by a Black filmmaker (Ryan Coogler). Though many have praised Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a worthy follow-up to Coogler's original film, the sequel has not quite reached the critical heights of its predecessor.

Whereas Black Panther earned a 94% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Wakanda Forever currently sits at a close 86%. That said, the sequel's audience rating is higher than the original, earning a 94% compared with Black Panther's 79%. The majority of critics and fans have praised Wakanda Forever's scale, performances and the tasteful way Coogler and company handled the passing of the late Chadwick Boseman. Meanwhile, detractors of the film have cited its pace and some of its story elements as points of criticism.

Regarding the film's lauded performances, many have singled out those of Letitia Wright and Angela Bassett, the latter of which is considered by many awards analysts as a favorite for a Best Supporting Actress nomination. If nominated, Bassett would become the first performer to receive an acting nod for a Marvel film. She was previously nominated for her lead turn as Tina Turner in 1993's What's Love Got to Do with It.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now in theaters.
