Marvel boast some of the greatest hero teams in all of comic books. From the Avengers and X-Men to teams like the Fantastic Four, there is no shortage of these teams. But power invites challenge, and over the years many villainous teams have popped up to fight them.

Among the dozens of villain teams in the comics, there are a few that stand out as especially powerful. It's not often that the despicable villains of Marvel wish to work together, so when they do, you know our heroes are in trouble. Here are some of Marvel Comics' strongest supervillain teams ever.

10 The Thunderbolts

Originally the Masters of Evil, the Thunderbolts pretended to be superheroes to gain the public's trust and praise. When it appeared that the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men had all been killed, the Thunderbolts took their place. The original team consisted of Baron Helmut Zemo, Beetle, Fixer Moonstone, and Screaming Mimi.

In addition to this original Thunderbolts team, there have been several different incarnations over the several decades of comics that followed. While not the most powerful supervillain team ever, they were still quite formidable.

9 The Sinister Six

All of Spider-Man's greatest foes, frustrated with their inability to defeat him, decided to team up to finally put him in the grave. The original group consisted of Electro, Kraven, Mysterio, Sandman, Vulture and their leader Doctor Octopus.

This team would be formidable for the Avengers or the X-Men, let alone one hero on their own. Many of Spidey's most challenging battles have been with this group. There have been dozens of different line-ups and roster changes, each of them just as intimidating as the last.

8 The Brotherhood of Mutants

A counter to Professor Xavier's X-Men, the Brotherhood of Mutants (also known as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, which is a little on the nose) is Magneto's team of super-powered individuals. They have served as a perfect counter to the X-Men, and have defeated the superhero team time and time again.

With members such as Magneto, Juggernaut, Sabertooth and Quicksilver, there is no shortage of powerful mutants in the Brotherhood.

7 The Dark Avengers

Now a seemingly reformed supervillain working for the government, Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin) was given leadership of the Thunderbolts. Mishmashing former Thunderbolts with new recruits, Osborn creates his own team, the Dark Avengers.

This team consisted of Sentry, Ares, Noh-Varr, Moonstone, Venom, Bullseye, Daken (the son of Wolverine) and Osborn in a suit of Iron Man armor, calling himself the Iron Patriot. This team took the Thunderbolts to a new level, adding villains whose power levels were absolutely off the charts.

6 The Hellfire Club

A secret society of wealthy elites, the Hellfire Club has many powerful mutants in its inner circle. Among these are Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost and Mastermind. Just these three by themselves are enough to take on the X-Men.

On one particular occasion, Mastermind gained control over Jean Grey in her Phoenix form. Upon doing this, they became by far the most powerful group in the Marvel universe. But even without her, the Hellfire Club has caused some serious problems for Marvel heroes and will most likely continue to do so.

5 The Masters of Evil

If the Avengers chose one group as their opposite, it would be the Masters of Evil. Formed by Baron Heinrich Zemo, this group was formed to help Zemo get revenge on his arch-enemy Captain America.

This is another group to have multiple incarnations throughout the years. Some lead by Zemo's son, others lead by Ultron, and even one lead by the evil scientist Egghead. No matter who's leading the team, they always serve as a formidable force opposing the Avengers.

4 Squadron Sinister

The original Sinister Squadron Supreme

Duplicates of the Squadron Supreme, the Squadron Sinister is made up of some of the most powerful beings the Avengers have ever faced. Created by the Grandmaster to defeat the Avengers, this team is no joke.

The Squadron Supreme, the team Squadron Sinister is cloned from, is based on the Justice League. Hyperion, the Superman archetype of the team, is one of the strongest beings that has ever entered the Marvel Universe. In addition to him, the team consists of Doctor Spectrum, Nighthawk and Whizzer. Every member is formidable and  powerful in their own ways, making for a versatile and deadly team.

3 The Black Order

Thanos' Black Order

Thanos' chosen team of emissaries, there are few more powerful than the Black Order. Although a version of the Black Order appeared in the most recent Avengers movies, called the Children of Thanos, the comic iteration of these characters is very different. More specifically, they're more powerful.

It took everything the Avengers had to defeat them, and if they fight again, it might be difficult to reproduce those results.

2 The Cabal

The Cabal in Marvel Comics

In the same vein as the Hellfire Club, sometimes, a supervillain team wants to be a little more clandestine with their activities. That's how the Cabal came about. This group was made up of Norman Osborn, Doctor Doom, Emma Frost, Loki, The Hood and Namor.

Yes, this formidable team has its weaknesses. As with a lot of these supervillain ensembles, there's constant in-fighting. Nevertheless, the Cabal is by far the most influential group of villains ever assembled. There is only one team that is more powerful.

1 The Cabal II

Thanos Cabal 1

In the Cabal's second iteration, they became even more powerful. This group was made up of Namor, Thanos, Maximus the Mad, Terrax, Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Black Swan and Maker (the evil Reed Richards from an alternate reality).

This new Cabal was only together for a short time. Despite that, they still are by far the most powerful super villain team ever assembled. Simply having Thanos and Namor would be deadly enough, but including a bevy of other cosmic heavy-hitters makes them a true force to be reckoned with.
