Weddings bring out the best and the worst of people and in the Marvel Universe. Marriage, in comics, can be seen as the end of a character’s romance storylines and typically have been built up for decades- but it can also embody a union of heroes or villains, becoming stronger together and better than they were apart.
From a supervillain wedding to the first marriage of Marvel’s First Family back in 1965, Marvel has held a lot of weddings in their pages, each having larger stories around them that make the wedding payoff even better.
10 The Inhumans Rejoice As Medusa and Black Bolt Officially Marry
While Medusa and Black Bolt have practically always been together, they didn’t have an official wedding until John Byrne's 18th annual of Fantastic Four. The first section of the annual focused on the battle between the two chosen warriors of the Kree-Skrull war. It then shifts to focus on the people of Attilan preparing for the wedding.
It also offers a look at the everyday Inhumans who make up the city as they get excited about the ceremony. Medusa and Black Bolt get married after having their ceremony interrupted, cementing their relationship.
9 Deadpool Sets A World Record And Marries Shiklah, Queen Of The Monsters
The record-holding issue, featuring the most characters on a cover, 236 to be exact, Deadpool #27, written by a super team of writers including Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn, and Mike Hawthorn, actually contains several weddings for Deadpool. The main one is his marriage to Shiklah, the Queen of the Monsters. It follows the day of Deadpool’s marriage, which includes finding his groomsmen and an officiant.
With Captain America, Doctor Strange, Thor, and Wolverine in tow and Nightcrawler officiating, Deadpool gets married and, for the first time in his life, doesn’t know what to say. It was weirdly sweet for the character, though it ended shortly after.
8 Northstar And His Human Husband Became Marvel's First Gay Marriage
Marjorie Liu's Astonishing X-Men #51 is a landmark issue due to its wedding between Alpha Flight hero Northstar and Kyle, the first gay marriage on comic pages. It begins with Northstar remembering the events that occurred up to the wedding, including Kyle being mind-controlled into attempting to kill himself and Northstar.
The issue also addresses several character’s issues with the wedding, including fellow Alpha Flight member Puck and the X-Men’s Havoc noting their awkwardness with the event and Warbird leaving due to her beliefs.
7 Marvel's First Family Becomes Real With Reed And Sue's Wedding
No one expected the wedding of Marvel’s First Family to go off without a hitch and the wedding of Sue and Reed Richards was an event-filled affair. Fantastic Four Annual #3, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, starts with Doctor Doom reading the news of the wedding.
The event is then attacked by Puppet Master, Mole Man and his minions, Red Ghost and his super apes, the Mandarin, Black Knight, Kang the Conquerer, and more. Luckily, the Fantastic Four has the help of the Avengers, X-men and other heroes to help end with the vows.
6 First A Baby, Then Marriage For Luke Cage And Jessica Jones
After the birth of their child together, there were a lot of questions about the relationship between Luke Cage and the powerful Jessica Jones. Luke asked Jessica to marry him and she never gave an answer until Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers Annual #1. Just after accepting the proposal, the Avengers Tower is attacked by Hydra’s Super Adaptoid.
After the Sentry, and the Void within his powers, end the battle, the wedding is on. As Stan Lee officiates, Jessica stops him to give her own vows, ending their long history of will-they won’t-they.
5 T'Challa And Storm Marry During Civil War As Marvel's Power Couple
Set during Civil War, the wedding of Storm and T’Challa was seen as a major event in the Marvel universe, as members of both sides were under a ceasefire. The tensions are high between most heroes, with both Captain America and Iron Man refusing to stay due to the other’s presence. The Watcher also appears setting up an event that never came to pass.
The wedding goes off without a hitch as Storm is welcomed to the family by the Panther God, though Spider-Man and Man-Ape get into a drunken brawl during the afterparty.
4 Gambit and Rogue Take Over Kitty Pryde And Colossus' Wedding To Get Married
The main plot of X-Men Gold #30 by Marc Guggenheim was the wedding of Kitty Pryde and Colossus, as the two had decided, after decades of off and on dating, to tie the knot. After plenty of X-Men-based chats, Kitty and Magick talk, which leads Kitty to no longer want to marry Colossus.
Another potential marriage is discussed early on between Nightcrawler and Rachel Summers, though they end things a few issues later. By the end, the festivities aren’t thrown to waste as Gambit and Rogue finally get married, leading to their own series, Mr. and Mrs. X.
3 Peter Parker and Mary Jane Finally Got Married In 1987
In 1987, after decades of Spider-Man stories and the death of Gwen Stacey, Peter Parker and Mary Jane finally got married, though their decision weighs heavily on both Peter and MJ. MJ deals with a former boyfriend buying her expensive gifts, including plane tickets to Paris and a Ferrari.
Peter is having doubts as he remembers Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacey’s deaths, even lamenting his doubt at his bachelor party. As the wedding begins, Peter shows up late and the two get married.
2 Super-Villains Deserve Love Too As Titania and Absorbing Man's Marriage Shows
While every other story mentioned has been about heroes getting married, one of the longest-running villain couples in Marvel’s history had their wedding on the pages of Glenn Herdling's Avengers Unplugged. She-Hulk stumbles into a courthouse filled with villains and assumes they are up to trouble.
After calling in the Avengers, the team finds they are crashing the festivities of Titania and Absorbing Man as they are getting married. After the Avengers realize what is happening, the team retreats, allowing the wedding to happen. Their marriage is still canon in the current comics.
1 Hulkling and Wiccan Secretly Got Married During Empyre
Empyre is one of the most recent major crossover storylines, being a precursor to the King In Black, which saw the end of the Kree-Skrull war and introduced a new antagonist in the form of the Cotati, who seek to end all living beings. Hulkling and Wiccan get their major break as A-list heroes for the first time since their Young Avengers days.
At the end of Al Ewing and Dan Slott's Empyre #4, the bomb is dropped that Wiccan and Hulkling had a wedding with just the Young Avengers in attendance. While more is seen in issue #5, this was the only showing of the wedding kiss and the first time the wedding was mentioned.
