Star Wars: Crimson Reign writer Charles Soule promises that the title will add on new layers to Darth Maul's criminal organization, Crimson Dawn.

Soule spoke with CBR in an interview discussing the upcoming book and the impact it will have on the galaxy far, far away. Crimson Dawn was previously run by Maul, the renegade Sith Lord, before recent Star Wars comics and War of the Bounty Hunters revealed that Han Solo's first love, Qi'ra, now controls the organization. According to Soule, there is a lot more for readers and fans alike to learn about Crimson Dawn and how it has evolved over the years.

When asked about whether Soule has shifted away from organized crime to write more about secret societies and cults, he discussed how Crimson Dawn blurs the line between those concepts. "I think it's a bit of both, really," Soule said. "Crimson Dawn was once run by Darth Maul, and he obviously had strong connections to the Sith. Those underpinnings still remain, in some form. But it's also a crime organization, working to achieve goals outside the bounds of Imperial law. Crimson Reign will get into a lot of that -- how it operates and why."

Crimson Dawn was controlled by Maul during the rise and height of the Galactic Empire, which takes place after the finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. He first turned to a life of crime after being reborn in The Clone Wars, seeking power for himself alongside his brother, Savage Opress, and seizing rule over the planet Mandalore. Qi'ra was introduced in Solo: A Star Wars Story and played by actor Emilia Clarke, the film teasing that she served and trained under Maul in Crimson Dawn.

Following War of the Bounty HuntersCrimson Reign will be set after the events of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, meaning that Maul is dead after being killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine during Star Wars: Rebels. After Qi'ra showed off her training with Maul against Darth Vader in War of the Bounty Hunters #3, along with her discussing with Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars #18 that her decisions are primarily based on what she can get in return, Soule's words about Maul's influence remaining and Crimson Dawn working to achieve its criminal goals have already echoed throughout the world of Star Wars.

While Soule said Crimson Reign will not be a "full-on crossover" like War of the Bounty Hunters, he promised that the events of the series will reverberate in other books as well, like Darth VaderDoctor Aphra and Bounty HuntersStar Wars: Crimson Reign #1 goes on sale Dec. 1 from Marvel Comics.
