Spider-Man's theme song doesn't boast about how he can do "whatever a spider can" for no reason. He really offers the best abilities that both a man and a spider can bring to the table, and then some.

On paper, one may not think that a spider and a man could do much damage, but his track record as a superhero has had enough upswing to earn him a spot on the Avengers roster. Even before he joined The Avengers, the team always viewed Spidey as an essential ally. Not only has he served as a strong backup partner for Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but there have also been times even when he had to save those mighty heroes from impending doom.

10 Saving The Avengers After They Fail To Help Him

panel from ends of the earth

The Spider-Man: Ends of the Earth storyline written by Dan Slott with artwork by Stefano Caselli and Humberto Ramos focused on Doctor Octopus scrounging up the Sinister Six for a complex plot to take over the world. As villains typically have such plots brewing in their minds, casually.

To combat them, Spider-Man recruits The Avengers for help, but as it turns out, the Sinister Six disposed of them with ease. This forced Spider-Man to work solely with his own devices, but miraculously, he is able to stop Doc Ock's plot, save the world, and save The Avengers all by himself.

9 Being Doctor Strange And Iron Man's Third Wheel

Avengers Infinity War Spider-Man Spider-Sense

In an attempt to retrieve the Time Stone from Doctor Strange, Thanos' minions Maw and Obsidian rampage through New York City during the first act of Avengers: Infinity War. And thanks to Spidey's Spidey Sense, he joined the thick of battle, too.

Strange and Iron Man struggled to take on a hulking beast and a magical Squidward by themselves, but Spider-Man helped even up the playing field in terms of power levels. At one point, Spidey even saves Doctor Strange from falling to his death.

8 Saving An X-Man And Avenger Gets Him Killed

Ultimate Spider-Man death

As many times as Spidey has saved the entire Avengers squad all at once, there have also been some instances where he has merely saved a handful or maybe just one Avenger at a time. In this scenario, saving an Avenger cost him his life.

In Death of Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar, Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Bagley, and David Lafuente, Spider-Man swoops in to fight the Green Goblin, who is in the middle of fighting off X-Men's Iceman and The Avengers' Human Torch. Unfortunately for Spider-Man, the scenario results in what appears to be Spidey's fatal death.

7 When He Reverts Captain America Out Of A Spider-Monster Form

Writer Dan Slott and artists Humberto Ramos, Stefano Caselli, Joe Caramagna, and Marte Gracia's Spider-Island storyline saw New York turned into Spider-Island when it comes down under the tyrannical rule of the Spider Queen.

For obvious reasons, this is a job for Spider-Man, but this also becomes an Avengers issue since one of the Queen's top minions is Captain America turned into a spider creature and, more importantly, the Queen's unwilling Spider King. With the help of Flash Thompson and his timely Venom symbiote, Spidey is able to vanquish the Queen, and her defeat reverts Cap back into a human.

Spider-Man-Parker-Industries-Collapse

Luckily, through a hefty amount of pomp and circumstance, Peter Parker comes into some money and becomes the head of his very own company: Parker Industries. It does not last too long as he eventually comes to his senses once the money starts to change him, but for a time being, he uses this newfound power and wealth to rebuild The Avengers as its de-facto figurehead.

5 When He Becomes A Backup Member Of The Avengers

Larry Hama, Paul Ryan, Tom Palmer, Christie Scheele, and Bill Oakley's Avengers #329 see the key members of the Avengers roster banished away to the Dimension of Exile by the Tetrarchs of Entropy. To replace them for the time being until the primary team gets rescued, Spider-Man is recruited as a backup reserve member of the Avengers.

In due time, the primary Avengers are brought back to earth, and the Tetrarchs of Entropy are vanquished. He may not have been the sole reason they were saved, but the reserve unit at large grouped together to avenge the main Avengers.

4 Spidey Sense Saves The Day Before Turmoil Begins

Prior to that #329 issues, readers first saw Spider-Man gain The Avengers' trust in Avengers #236, by Roger Stern and Al Milgrom. In it, Spider-Man clings himself to the bottom of the team's Quinjet determined to earn himself a spot in The Avengers.

For obvious reasons, The Avengers disapproved of Spider-Man's insistence and began to scold him for it. However, in being there, his Spidey Sense activated in time to warn the group of danger near. Not only did an earthquake proceed to hit, but a gallery of villains in the form of Blackout, Moonstone, Rhino, and Electro proceeded to attack. With the help of Spidey, they disposed of the antagonists with ease. It was hard to deny Spider-Man a role on the team after that.

3 When The Avengers Personally Request His Help

Spider-Man and Thor arrive at Avengers HQ in Avengers #314

Flash forward to Avengers #315 written by John Byrne with art by Paul Ryan, Tom Palmer, Christie Scheele, and Bill Oakley. This is when and where The Avengers actually personally approaches Spidey for his help. Maybe it's because he did such a swell job the last time that he worked with The Avengers, but he was needed to search for Nebula and her quest for the Infinity Union.

He accepts and during the mission, he proves to be a valuable asset in getting The Avengers out of some jams throughout the next few issues. Unfortunately, there comes a point where he actually dooms everyone—or at least they would be if they didn't get help from The Stranger—when Spidey inadvertently grants Nebula her god-like powers. But hey, at least he did more good than bad. It just so happens that the bad was really, really bad and nearly had them locked in a Void.

With everyone from Carnage to Thanos out on the loose, even The Avengers struggled to contain every one among themselves. Not to mention, he earns himself an Avengers membership to boot.

1 When He Beat Firelord By Himself

the avengers have to hold back spider-man from beating firelord

As a Herald of Galactus, Firelord was able to use an ounce of the Eater of Worlds' strength to topple most of the New York City area just by himself. Not even the combined forces of The Avengers had enough power on their side to take him out.

It took Spider-Man —with some assistance from a symbiote affected black suit—to get the job done. During a hard-fought one-on-one battle, Spidey was able to beat Firelord to a pulp. Even with the villain unconscious, Spider-Man wasn't satisfied. The Avengers had to hold him back from doing more damage to the pyromaniac.
