The spider is a popular inspiration for superhero costumes and powers in Marvel Comics. Spiders are sneaky, venomous, skilled web-slingers, and more than a little creepy to most people. You'd think they would make for a good villain, but instead, one of the most popular - perhaps the most popular-  Marvel superheroes uses the spider as his name.

From the various incarnations of Spider-Man to all the Spider-Women out there, many heroes and villains alike have found inspiration in the arresting arachnid. Even Spider-Ham, the porkier version of Spider-Man, adopted the moniker. Some of these spiders have fought side-by-side, but many have faced off in battle as well. If we pit each Spider-Man against each Spider-Woman, who would win? Here are 5 Spider-Women who would win, and 5 Spider-Men who would end up victorious.

10 Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)

The daughter of an accomplished geneticist, Jessica Drew became ill as a girl from radiation exposure. Her father saved her life by injecting her with a spider serum and placing her in a genetic accelerator which slowed her aging process. When she emerged, she had spider-like powers.

Jessica has superhuman strength, speed, healing, agility and more. She can also scale walls without technology and give off venom blasts. These blasts are made of bio-electricity and are powerful enough to kill, should she desire to do so. With all these powers, Spider-Woman could easily take down Spider-Man in a fight.

9 Spider-Man (Peter Parker)

As most people know, Peter Parker developed his spider-like powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager. After his uncle Ben was killed by a thief Peter allowed to escape, he realized that it's his responsibility to fight crime. He has these powers, so he must use them.

Peter is capable of superhuman strength, speed, stamina and more. He can climb walls easily and developed web fluid that he shoots from devices on his wrists. Peter's edge over Spider-Woman is his Spider-Sense that warns him of imminent danger. Using this, he can avoid an incoming attack.

8 Silk

Cindy Moon as Silk

The same spider that bit Peter Parker bit a young woman named Cindy Moon before it died. Cindy developed powers as well and trained with Ezekiel Sims before being locked in a bunker for thirteen years to hide her from a villain. When she emerges from the bunker, she has to find her family who moved while she was gone.

Cindy has powers much like Spider-Man, including superhuman strength and agility, and the ability to climb walls. She has a Silk Sense that warns her of imminent danger. Cindy is incredibly agile and has the distinct advantage of being able to produce web fluid from the tips of her fingers instead of having to engineer it.

7 Spider-Man (Miles Morales)

Much like Cindy and Peter, Miles Morales was bitten by a spider as a teenager. Miles chose to deny his new superhuman abilities in an attempt to continue life as normal. Once his universe's Spider-Man dies, however, Miles opts to continue Peter's legacy by becoming a hero himself.

Miles has the average spider-like powers including wall-climbing, superhuman strength, speed, agility, etc. He also has the Spider-Sense. He can enact a Venom Blast like Spider-Woman, with some different advances. But his unique talent is his ability to camouflage and fade into his background, essentially becoming invisible.

6 Ghost-Spider

Gwen Stacy was, you guessed it, bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager. She developed superhuman abilities and was branded Spider-Woman by the media. In her universe, Peter Parker accidentally turned himself into a lizard while trying to replicate Gwen's powers. Gwen was forced to fight him and he passed away after returning to human form. Haunted by the guilt of Peter's death, Gwen fights crime despite being labeled a criminal himself for Peter's death.

Ghost-Spider has typical spider-like skills including superhuman strength, agility, speed, etc. She uses web-shooters to produce her webbing. Her particular advantage is her analytical problem-solving skills that she likely received from her police officer father.

5 Spider-X

Brian Kornfield received his spider-like powers from a minion of Chthon, the demon. Angered by his mother's mugging, he used his powers for revenge. Spider-X ultimately reclaimed his image by teaming up with heroes to defeat the energy monster Zzzax, dying in the process.

Brian had the usual powers of superhuman strength, speed, agility, etc. He could produce a webbing that was coated in a powerful acid. He also had razor-sharp fangs that produced energy blasts. Atop all his special advantages, Brian also had four extra limbs that sprouted from his back.

4 Arachne

Julia Carpenter as the hero Arachne in Marvel Comics

Julia Carpenter thought she was participating in a normal research study about her athleticism. Instead, she was injected with a spider serum that gave her superhuman powers. Originally an everyday family-woman and mom, Julia was soon drawn into the crimefighting world alongside our beloved heroes.

In addition to the standard spider-powers, Julia has an advanced sense of touch much like a spider sensing vibrations on its web. She also has psionic powers that set her apart from her spider counterparts. Arachne can produce psi-webbing that she can control with her mind.

3 Ezekiel Sims

Ezekiel Sims brings the whole Spider-Verse into the Totem world. He received his powers from the Web of Life and Destiny, a model of the complete multiverse that allows travel between universes. According to Ezekiel, all Spider entities are totems of this Web and derive their powers from it. Being neither hero nor villain exactly, he acts as an unofficial liaison of the Web.

Beyond the usual, Ezekiel possesses Spider-Sense immunity, so he can't be detected by Spider-Sense. He is strong and agile despite being 57 years old. But his strongest advantage is his knowledge of mysticism and the occult, which few other spider-people possess.

2 Spider-Girl

Anya Corazon wasn't bitten by a spider. Instead, she gained her powers by saving the life of a sorcerer of the Spider Society who transferred his powers to her to save her life after she absorbed a killing blow meant for him. She then joined the Spider Society as their Hunter. After departing the organization, Anya became Jessica Drew's protege.

Apart from regular spider-powers, Spider-Girl can produce her own webbing and hide skillfully in the shadows. Before her transformation, she was a talented gymnast, a skill that transferred easily to her new life. Her most unique power is that she is capable of growing a blue exoskeleton to protect herself.

1 Tarantula (Luis Alvarez)

Luis Alvarez was injected with a serum that gave him powers as part of his (fictional) South American country's program to develop their own Captain America. He was the second individual to take on the Tarantula mantle. He was sent to America to hunt down his country's refugees and ended up running into several American superheroes.

Luis doesn't have the usual slate of spider-powers, though he uses a spider name. The serum gave him generally increased strength and agility. Tarantula's greatest advantage is the retractable blades on his boots that are coated with a deadly poison.
