Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed that the idea to bring together the MCU and Sony universes happened long before Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

In the post-credits scene of the film, Eddie Brock and the symbiote are seemingly transported away from their idyllic beach setting to a room where a TV plays footage of J. Jonah Jameson discussing the reveal of Spider-Man's true identity. The implication is that Venom now exists in the MCU, though it's not clear if the rest of the franchise's events occurred there as well or in a parallel world. While the details are still vague, Feige said the idea of uniting the character began after the first film made such a big impact.

"You look at the obvious comic connotations between Venom and Spider-Man and it is inherent. So the minute Sony made their Venom movie and it worked as well as it did, and Tom Hardy became as iconic as he has become as Venom, then the obvious question is then, 'How do we start to merge them?'"

Venom debuted in 2018 to abysmal reviews -- but general acclaim from audiences -- ultimately earning $856 million up the global box office. The success all but guaranteed a sequel, which finally arrived this year, but it seems it also inspired Feige and company to start brainstorming ways to make Tom Hardy's take on the character the definitive version in the MCU.

Of course, wanting and executing are two different things. Following Venom 2's release in October, Feige discussed the effort required to pull off the scene. "There was a lot of coordination — and if you don’t know all the coordination yet, I’m not going to be the one to tell you — but yes, between Sony and Marvel and the Venom team and the [Spider-Man:] No Way Home team," Feige said. "We worked together on it."

Feige also hasn't been shy about the potential for the two comic book rivals to meet in the MCU. Back in 2019, Feige said a Spider-Man/Venom movie was "likely." And just this month, the Marvel boss talked about how Spider-Man: No Way Home proves that Disney and Sony can pull off anything now that they're so perfectly working together on their various Spidey properties.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is available on VOD, with a home video release set for Dec. 14.
