Marvel's Spider-Man Nominated For Game of the Year

Marvel's Spider-Man video game

The blockbuster Marvel's Spider-Man has been nominated for Game of the Year for 2018 by the Game Awards.

Developed by Insomniac Games for PlayStation 4, Marvel's Spider-Man has received overwhelmingly positive reviews since its release in early September, and it has proved to be the gift that keeps on giving. The first DLC expansion, "The Heist," debuted last month, with the second, "Turf Wars," set to arrive on Tuesday.

The Game Awards nomination should come as little surprise, given the anticipation and initial reaction to the PS4 exclusive. Marvel's Spider-Man was nominated in 2017 as Most Anticipated Game, which carried through with the sale of 3.3 million units within the first three days of release. It's the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever. The game also recorded 1 million preorder copies sold, another record for Sony.

Of course, actually winning Game of the Year could prove difficult. For one, Spider-Man will likely only have the backing of PS4 owners, while fellow nominees like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey also have Xbox One users in their corner. The other nominees in the category are God of War, Celeste and Monster Hunter World.

Spider-Man is also nominated for Best Game Direction, so it has a chance to take home two prizes when the winners are announced on Dec. 6 in Los Angeles.

The full list of 2018 nominees can be found on the Game Awards website.
