10 Drummer In A Band

To understand Spider-Gwen, one must first understand the woman behind the mask, Gwen Stacey. No longer the love interest of Peter Parker who meets a tragic end at the hands of the Green Goblin, the Earth-65 version of Gwen is not only the young teen destined to become a hero, but is also a pretty awesome drummer in a band.

Joined by Mary Jane Watson, Betty Brant and Glory Grant, the foursome created a band named the Mary Janes. The band and her friendship with the girls often become a source of contention as her duties as Spider-Gwen increase.

9 Peter Parker’s New Origin

One of the most unique aspects of Gwen Stacey’s transition into Spider-Gwen has to be the relationship she has with the Earth-65 version of Peter Parker. While longtime Spider-Man fans know that Peter was the teen who was bitten by a radioactive spider and turned into the web-slinging hero of the Marvel Universe, this Peter had a very different destiny.

After Gwen took his place as the one bitten by the spider, Peter became bitter when the constant bullying he endured at school finally got the better of him. Using his genius intellect, he created the Lizard serum, turning himself into The Lizard.

8 Gwen Blamed For Peter’s Passing

The defining thing about most Spider-heroes of the Marvel Multiverse is the tragedy that defines their heroic careers. Most people already know the story of Peter losing his Uncle Ben to a robbery, much like the tragic loss of Bruce Wayne’s parents in DC Comic’s Batman comics.

Yet for Gwen Stacey, the moment came when she was framed for a crime she didn’t commit. When Peter became the Lizard, Gwen had no idea who the monster really was. Trying to stop the rampaging beast, she fought the Lizard. However the serum adversely affected Peter, poisoning him. Heartbroken at losing her best friend, authorities believed her Spider-Gwen responsible for his loss.

7 Hunted By Own Father

With Spider-Gwen being hunted by the police for the crime of taking Peter Parker’s life despite her innocence, Gwen must hide her identity as the masked hero from everyone she cares about, including her father George Stacey, a police chief with the NYPD. That’s because he is one of the cops hunting down Spider-Gwen.

However when an assassin is sent to take George Stacey’s life, Gwen must don her mask and stop the assassin, with her father ultimately holding her at gunpoint upon the battle ending. That is when Gwen is forced to reveal herself to her father as Spider-Woman.

6 Arch-Nemesis Is Matt Murdock

One of the biggest parts of Spider-Gwen’s early career as a vigilante in New York City has to be her constant battle with the Kingpin of Crime. Spider-Man also battle the Kingpin often in the main Marvel universe, but the Earth-65 version of the Kingpin was not Wilson Fisk. Instead it was Matt Murdock himself.

Yes, the blind lawyer in this universe is the Kingpin of Crime and a major member of the Hand. Running the crime in the city, he is constantly testing Gwen and going after her and her allies, trying to push her over the edge to make her more like him.

5 Hunted By Frank Castle

Another interesting aspect of Gwen’s career is her interactions with Frank Castle, who in the main Marvel universe is well known to be The Punisher. The Earth-65 version of Frank is an NYPD officer who was tasked with taking over the Spider-Woman investigation A veteran who survived a brutal attack alongside his future wife Maria, they had two children.

After working as a member of Tony Stark’s private army WAR MACHINE, Frank found himself working his way up the ranks of the NYPD. Sadly his wife and children left him, making him obsessed with taking down Spider-Woman by any means necessary.

4 Bonded To Symbiote

When her powers began to fail after a cross dimensional story arc with Earth 616’s Jessica Drew and Silk, Gwen found herself begrudgingly working with Matt Murdock in order to use isotopes to give her her powers. Eventually in an attempt to give her powers back permanently she worked with a scientist named Elsa Brock.

Combining the Lizard serum with the isotopes replicating her powers, Elsa and Gwen created the Symbiote, which bonded to Gwen. After Murdock has her father beaten by the Rhino, her anger causes the Symbiotes negative nature to take over, making her into a ruthless vigilante.

3 Revealed Herself To Public

After nearly losing herself to the symbiote, Gwen managed to gain control of the symbiote and prevent herself from taking Murdock’s life. Instead she defeated him and the Hand, and in the end she decided there was only one way to save her father from a prison sentence for protecting her identity.

She revealed herself to the public, revealing her Spider-Woman identity and serving a brief prison term for her actions as the hero. She refused a lighter sentence to work for a government black ops team led by Captain America (Samantha Wilson), and served her full sentence before finally gaining her freedom.

2 Major Hero In Spider-Verse Stories

Over the last several crossover events that saw the Spiders of the Spider-Verse battling a new foe, Gwen has been a major player in the conflict. Hunted down by an immortal race of vampiric creatures known as the Inheritors who only feed on Spider-heroes, Gwen joins 616 Peter Parker, Miles Morales and several other Spiders to take down the foes.

Appearing not only in Spider-Verse and Spider-Geddon, Gwen is also a notable member of the Web Warriors, a group of Spider heroes from other worlds who work to protect the multiverse from threats both Spider-related and not Spider-related.

1 Become Ghost Spider

In more recent years, Spider-Gwen has become Ghost Spider. After leaving prison and trying to return to a normal life of becoming a superhero, fighting crime, spending time with her friends and the band, and rekindling her relationships with her father and her best friend Harry Osborn, she realized life was much more difficult.

After villains targeted her family and the Symbiote began giving her headaches, she traveled to the 616 universe for help. While Peter Parker analyzed a sample of the Symbiote, she took advantage of her anonymity and became Ghost Spider, as well as enrolled in NYU to enjoy an education without her universe’s threats constantly threatening her.
