Warning: The following contains spoilers for Annihilation: Scourge - Silver Surfer #1 by Dan Abnett, Paul Davidson, Matt Milla and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Two of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe - the Silver Surfer and the Sentry - are so outlandishly powerful that almost no mortal enemy can stand before them. But in Annihilation: Scourge, they're on a collision course since the Void, the Sentry's darker half, is leading an army of undying monstrosities from the Cancerverse.

And in Annihilation: Scourge - Silver Surfer #1, the Void and his forces present a big enough threat that Silver Surfer and the Sentry's human half, Bob Reynolds, are forced to fuse into a single being to try and gain an edge in the coming battle. However, that fusion might end up being even worse news for the future of the Marvel Universe.

STRANGE VISITOR

Silver Surfer Sentry

While flying through the Negative Zone, the Silver Surfer stumbles across what appears to just be a random man floating through the cosmos. As he approaches him, the man reveals that he's actually Bob Reynolds - the human side of the Sentry. Sensing that Reynolds is "incomplete." the Surfer learns about how Bob unleashed the Void by accident within the Negative Zone. Aware he doesn't have the power to take on a fully formed Void, the Surfer uses his new power to fuse with other beings on Bob, resulting in the creation of one of the most potentially powerful beings in the Marvel multiverse, a veritable Silver Sentry.

Together in one form, this new composite being could access Bob's knowledge and insight into the Void to give them a possible edge in their plans going forward. Coupled with the Surfer's will and connection to the Power Cosmic, the Silver Sentry might have the power to make it a fair fight. Taking on aspects of both men, the new being flies into action to stop the Void and the Cancerverse from spreading any further. However, the question they're not considering is what happens after the battle with the Void.

WHY THAT'S NOT NESSICARILY A GOOD THING

Due to his time as the Sentry, Bob Reynolds has long been plagued with mental health issues. While they can be in-part traced back to the effect the Void has had on him over the years. it's also left an unmistakable series of psychological scars on his psyche. That might not be the best person to couple with the unstoppable Power Cosmic. Still, the Silver Sentry might be the only being capable of dealing with the Void and his seemingly unstoppable armies from the Cancerverse.

The Silver Surfer also isn't in the best place he's ever been, either. After being sent into the distant past in Silver Surfer: Black, the titular cosmic hero ended up in battle against the dark and ancient symbiote god, Knull. Although he was able to absorb a great deal of energy from across the universe, the Surfer didn't use it to try and kill Knull. Instead, he merely blasted Knull across the universe before using the power to spread life across existence. Although the act collapsed his body collapsed into nothing, the Surfer was conscious the entire time as the energies seeded all of creation, watching until the modern-day when he was able to finally reconstitute himself on the physical plane - albeit in a new black body with tweaked powers.

The Silver Surfer even accepts that he may be dangerous in his new form. While the Power Cosmic's presentiment that disaster approaches is most likely a reference to the oncoming wave from the Negative Zone, it could also be tied closer to the Surfer. This could be brought on by Bob's mental issues affecting the Surfer in dangerous or unexpected ways. Even worse, would be if Bob Reynolds is forced to fuse once more with the Void, and the Surfer is still a part of him. There's a chance then the Void could infect the Surfer himself, gaining access to the Power Cosmic and corrupting the Surfer in the process. That would be more than enough of a threat to get the attention of the entire Marvel Universe and could easily be at the center of a future Marvel event if it comes to pass.
