IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond predicted that Marvel will shift some of its 2021 release dates.

While doing an interview with Deadline about the future of IMAX and the movie industry in general, Gelfond was asked how his company plans to handle the avalanche of blockbuster films that were pushed back from 2020 premiere dates to sometime in 2021. "If they're from the same studio they are usually amenable to sharing screens," he said. "So if there's a tentpole that's more family oriented we can play that during the day and the other one later."

However, Gelfond predicts that certain films will shift their premiere dates, including Marvel's. "Marvel has something like five films scheduled for next year," he noted. "My guess is they'll move some of that around, but that's a lot."

Still, Gelfond is excited about the challenge of IMAX screens being in such high demand come 2021. "Jurassic World is next year and then Top Gun got moved to next year. I think Mission: Impossible is next year, so there's an awful lot going on. That's a high class problem, right?"

Indeed, 2021 will be packed with Marvel films, starting with Marvel Studio's The Eternals on Feb. 12 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on May 7. There is also the joint Marvel/Sony production of the untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel, which is set to debut on Dec. 17, 2021, as well as Sony's Morbius, out March 19, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which will premiere on June 25.

Of course, all these dates are subject to change depending on how the coronavirus pandemic continues to play out in the United States and across the world. They also have to account for Black Widow, which is scheduled to premiere on Nov. 6, 2020. If that film is further delayed, it would most likely push back all of Marvel Studios's 2021 releases, while possibly impacting Sony's as well.

Directed by Chloé Zhao with a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, The Eternals stars Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Gemma Chan as Sersi and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, aka the Black Knight. The film will premiere in theaters on Feb. 12, 2021.
