Kim's Convenience star Simu Liu received a surprise for his birthday -- the trailer for his upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Liu began his birthday by sharing a Shang-Chi poster with his followers on Twitter. "Whoever said that you could only RECEIVE presents on your birthday? Today, I’m giving you your VERY FIRST LOOK at the teaser poster for @ShangChi and the Legend of the Ten Rings!!" Liu captioned the tweet and reminded fans that the first trailer would drop in a few weeks.
However, Liu received a birthday surprise a half hour later when Marvel shared the official teaser trailer for the upcoming MCU film. "Happy Birthday @SimuLiu!" Marvel tweeted. "We hope you enjoy your birthday present."
Liu replied to the surprise trailer with the tweet, "WAIT WHAT?!"
The teaser featured flashbacks of Shang-Chi being trained in martial arts by his father, Wenwu. One memorable sequence involved Shang-Chi fighting several men aboard the subway. Liu later tweeted props to Marvel for the surprise, saying, "Well played @MarvelStudios. Well played." The Shang-Chi star also celebrated his name becoming the #1 trending topic on Twitter for his birthday by sharing that he was "picking up poop" at the time.
While Liu was not formally trained in martial arts before his casting in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, he practiced extensively for the role. "I had maybe worked a few days as a stuntman in Toronto," Liu said. "But really, my martial arts experience was like backflipping in my backyard when I was a teenager and doing parkour with my friends."
The action sequences in the Shang-Chi trailer are just a fraction of what fans can expect from the film, according to the film's producer Jonathan Schwartz. "I think this is the best action [Marvel has] ever done," Schwartz shared. "[Every] punch is meaningful, every fighting style is meaningful and the story is told visually in such a great way."
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Dave Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Jiang Nan, Meng'er Zhang, Ronny Chieng, Fala Chen, Dallas Liu and Jiang Len. The film arrives in theaters Sept. 3.
