Hill was first introduced in 2012's The Avengers as the MCU's resident agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and close friend of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Smulders made several guest appearances as the character in ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which premiered in 2013 and ran for seven seasons. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Hill helps Nick Fury, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow and Sam Wilson/Falcon thwart the evil HYDRA organization that had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. Her next appearance was in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where she again aids the Avengers in defeating the formidable threat known as Ultron.

Hill is seen turning to dust in Avengers: Infinity War's post-credits scene and appears next in Avengers: Endgame after being resurrected by Bruce Banner/The Hulk using the Infinity Stones. While Endgame was technically the last time Hill showed up in the MCU, Smulders reprised the role in Spider-Man: Far From Home as a Skrull named Soren disguised as Hill. Throughout the chronology of the MCU, Hill proves herself time and again to be a capable, intelligent and trustworthy operative and ally to the Avengers.

Secret Invasion was first announced in December 2020 and is based on the 2008-09 Marvel Comics event of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis, Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales and Laura Martin. The series, which spanned several titles, saw the Skrulls acting on a long-term plan to invade Earth by replacing many of the planet's most powerful and recognizable superheroes. Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn will reprise their roles as Nick Fury and Talos, respectively. Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald and Carmen Ejogo will also star in the upcoming series. Ben-Adir will portray the show's lead villain, the identity of whom has yet to be revealed.
