Scarlet Witch and Thanos are arguably two of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe. We’ve seen them both in the MCU, first in Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos is able to trick Scarlet Witch using an Infinity Stone. We see them again in Avengers: End Game, which according to Rotten Tomatoes, is the second-highest rated sci-fi/fantasy movie of all time. Scarlet Witch seems about to destroy Thanos, and probably could have, if he hadn’t called upon his armies.

Comics have a lot more to offer when it comes to both characters. There are many ways Scarlet Witch could overcome Thanos, but there are quite a few he could gain the upper hand. Here are five ways she could defeat him, and five he could defeat her.

10 Scarlet Witch: Her Magical Powers

Scarlet Witch wields magic like nobody’s business, and her list of powers is huge. She has the ability to transmute matter, alter probability, control minds, control elements, and commune with the dead – just to name a few.

Her mastery of magic is like none other, and her control of Chaos Magic gives her a great chance against Thanos. Thanos hates chaos – in fact, it is this hatred that drives him. He imagines that death is the end of chaos but going up against the Queen of Chaos would surely result in a loss for him.

9 Thanos: His Powers Of Immunity

Thanos’ innate powers include superhuman strength, superhuman durability, immortality, and some telekinesis and telepathy. Scarlet Witch could use her tools against him if those were the limit of his powers, but ultimately, Thanos cannot be harmed by normal means.

Injury, poison, and disease don’t affect him. He doesn’t need to eat, and he is immune to telepathy. Because of his relationship with the goddess of Death, he also has the ability to rise from the dead. All of these things could spell trouble in a battle against Scarlet Witch.

8 Scarlet Witch: Her Ability To Warp Reality

One of Scarlet Witch’s most impressive abilities is her reality warping. Thanks to her Chaos Magic, she was able to alter the entire earth’s reality, and she has the ability to alter reality for the entire multiverse. Her powers seem to have no end, although at times even she doesn’t seem to know what she’s capable of.

At one point she erased the mutant gene in almost all the mutants on earth. If she could channel her powers properly, she could alter Thanos’ reality in order to defeat him. While he also possesses reality-warping powers, he requires an Infinity Gem to do so (but more on that later).

7 Thanos: The Lengths That He Will Go To

Thanos is the ultimate villain. With his lust for power, his murderous ways, and his wicked intent, he would be a formidable foe for Scarlet Witch. While Scarlet Witch started out as a villain with the Brotherhood of Mutants, she changed her ways to eventually become an Avenger, effectively atoning for her sins the best she could.

While Scarlet Witch has an inherent morality, Thanos’ moral compass is dangerously askew. He has a complete disregard for human life and has decimated planets in his misguided attempt to help the universe. He has an unhealthy obsession with the goddess of Death, and many of his endeavors are meant to honor or impress her. At one point he wiped out half the universe as an homage to Death.

6 Scarlet Witch: Thanos Needs The Infinity Gems

Another of Thanos’ obsessions is obtaining the Infinity Gems for the Infinity Gauntlet. The Infinity Gems are immensely powerful stones that control different states: mind, power, reality, soul, space, and time. Each stone is extremely powerful on its own, and when they all work together, their power is infinite. With them, Thanos can become omnipotent, but without them, he loses much of his power.

Without the Gems or the Gauntlet, Thanos is extremely vulnerable, especially to someone as powerful as Scarlet Witch. At one time, when the Gauntlet is stolen by his granddaughter Nebula, he was easily defeated by the Avengers.

5 Thanos: Scarlet Witch Is Easily Manipulated

Her past remains a secret even to her, as she has been the victim of many manipulations over the years. Magneto manipulated her into believing he was her and Quicksilver’s real father, which resulted in them joining the Brotherhood of Mutants.

Later, she was betrayed by Doctor Doom, who was manipulating her to gain her powers for himself. Another villain, the High Evolutionary, is also responsible for planting seeds of doubt as to where her powers came from, and who her true parents were. Plausibly, Thanos could also capitalize on this weakness of hers. When it comes to matters of the heart, she is willing to believe a lot.

4 Scarlet Witch: Her Team Affiliations

Scarlet Witch became a member of the Avengers after leaving Magneto and the Brotherhood, and it set her on a righteous path. Joined by the likes of Captain America, The Vision, and Hawkeye, they make a formidable team. “Earth’s mightiest heroes” are sworn to protect the world from threats, both earthly and cosmic.

The Avengers have defeated countless dangers with Scarlet Witch at their side. She has also joined forces with the X-Men at times. With the combined efforts of both teams, they could imaginably defeat Thanos.

3 Thanos: Scarlet Witch's Family

Scarlet Witch’s familial bond with her brother Quicksilver is tremendous. Having lived through their share of struggles from a young age, the connection between them is undeniable. Although Quicksilver can often act like an overbearing big brother, she would do anything for him. This would become a problem if Thanos were to use him as leverage.

Her husband, Vision, as well as their children, could also cause problems for Scarlet Witch. Her love for Vision is unmatchable, and they worked closely together as Avengers. When she discovered her children were actually part of a diabolical plan by the demon Mephisto, it nearly drove her to madness. Thanos could also exploit these relationships.

2 Scarlet Witch: Thanos' Instability

A glimpse into Thanos’ past might offer some answers as to how he became so destructive. His own mother tried to kill him at birth due to his appearance. He believes he is fated to be the protector of the universe, but his delusions of grandeur are hazardously unstable. His title, after all, is “the Mad Titan.”

Thanos’ mental instability, due to its unpredictability, could make him easier for Scarlet Witch to defeat. His own worst enemy is his own mind, his obsessions, and his erroneous sense of ethics. Scarlet Witch, with the right set of tools, could set his own mind against himself.

1 Thanos: Scarlet Witch's Instability

When Scarlet Witch was left bereft of family, something of the utmost importance to her, she teetered on the edge of insanity. With her immense powers, she became a danger not only to herself but to the Avengers. In her madness, she blamed them for the death of her sons and the loss of Vision. When Quicksilver is killed, she becomes completely unhinged.

Even without directly engaging with Scarlet Witch, Thanos could have the upper hand here. At times, she is inwardly self-destructive. Even without Thanos’ help, she managed to undergo extreme suffering. Combining unstable strong emotions with great powers is a dangerous recipe.
