Marvel has been redefining what we know of the Conan villain, Kulan Gath since the Cimmerian returned to the publisher, especially in the pages of Savage Avengers. After Punisher, Elektra, Conan and Wolverine helped fend off the evil sorcerer, Kulan retreated, promising to return to fight another day.

However, his Third Eye of Agamotto has been stolen by Conan, which led to a meeting with Doctor Doom in Latveria. Doom's a sorcerer as well who's always up to no good and, as he tries to get his hands on this relic, it turns out a new Sorcerer Supreme may have been revealed -- none other than a reborn Kulan himself.

Conan's being wooed by Doom who had premonitions of Kulan's Amulet of Power and what he could accomplish with it. Over the years, Kulan's battled Strange, Spider-Man, the Avengers, X-Men and other mystical Marvel warriors to try to use this Amulet of Power to attain the full might of the godlike Shuma Gorath, but everything has been changed now that we know it's the Third Eye, and Doom senses the potential.

Doctor Strange has been doing his research, however, and while it's not as ancient as his Eye, he too can sense its power and it may well be even more dangerous than his one. He wants the Eye before Doom can barter a deal with Conan so he too heads to Latveria and, as predicted, finds Doom bargaining for it, although Conan's a tough sell as he hates sorcerers.

Eventually, the trio head to a city that appeared in Egypt, thinking it's where Kulan's essence is hiding, but while there, Doom loses patience upon discovering the villain really isn't present. He betrays Conan and Strange but when he dons the Amulet, his body is disintegrated and Kulan emerges, stronger than ever with the necklace around him. It's exactly what Strange didn't want to happen as he knew Kulan with the chain would be exactly the trouble Agamotto feared in times past, and it's also what the Ancient One as Sorcerer Supreme fought against.

Strange's Eye couldn't even unlock secrets of this Eye when they studied it and, seeing as it has a dark protection spell on it, he realized whoever wielded it would surpass him and basically become the new, evil Sorcerer Supreme. Even if it's not an official title, it's all about the majesty held within and now, Kulan's back, bigger and badder than ever, which leaves Strange petrified.

What's interesting is that Kulan predicted Doom's double-cross from his hidden realm where he's been plotting all along with Brother Voodoo, trying to understand his intent. Voodoo was hoping to find a way to kill Kulan but it appears he's been corrupted. Fans are hoping he has discovered something, though, because Strange needs all hands on deck as Kulan has almost killed him a couple of times. The doctor tasked Elektra in the last issue to find Daniel Drumm (Voodoo's brother) in Hell as well, as he believes the Drumm brothers could be the key, together, to defeating Kulan.

As it stands, the Third Eye is the one Strange fears the most and Kulan's in front of him; intimidating as ever. The First Eye Strange has just isn't as that strong, the Second One isn't in his possession and, unfortunately, he doesn't have many supernatural allies waiting in the wings to offer their services. Right now, Conan's all he has and with Kulan upgraded, even the Cimmerian warrior won't be enough to take down this wicked Sorcerer Supreme.

Savage Avengers #9 goes on sale Jan. 15, 2020.
