For their latest adaptation of a best-selling novelist's work, Marvel Comics is having fun playing with James Patterson's toys.

Today the publisher released a new variant cover by John Tyler Christopher for April's "James Patterson's Max Ride: First Flight" mini series recasting the series lead as a classic action figure. The comic itself will be created by "Lois Lane" writer Marguerite Bennett and "Elektra" artist Alex Sanchez and will adapt the first book in Patterson's sci-fi YA series "Maximum Ride," "The Angel Experiment."

"I think the biggest thing here is we have James Patterson's 'Maximum Ride,' but this is Marvel's 'Maximum Ride,'" Patterson told CBR News last fall. "I challenged them to outdo me. I said, "Make it better. Do what you want to do. This is your baby. Reboot it. What would you change? What would you keep?" So I want this to be a real treat for people who aren't aware of the series and also something new and interesting for people who are."

"James Patterson's Max Ride: First Flight" #1 ships on April 8, 2015.
