WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man#10 by Saladin Ahmed, Javier Garrón, Annie Wu, David Curiel and Rachelle Rosenberg, on sale now.
Miles Morales' recent adventures haven't gone according to plan at all. Not only is he still recovering from traumatic incidents such as his "One More Day" deal with Mephisto to bring back dead allies in the Champions, as well as the re-emergence of the Ultimate Green Goblin, he's also battling demons within after a brutal personal ordeal.
The Assessor recently held, tortured and experimented on the young superhero, and he's been afraid to don the costume in Brooklyn ever since. However, one ray of light has cut through all this darkness with Starling, another vigilante mopping up crime in New York, and in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #11, we finally get the full history of Miles' latest superhero colleague.
Starling popped up in Miles Morales #5 and #6, briefly revealing herself to be Tiana Toomes, the granddaughter of the Vulture, Adrian Toomes. In trying to go clean, he passed some of his old equipment down to her. Now, the full story has been revealed as she continues to hunt gangs by stealing tech, which builds on her and Miles imprisoning Tombstone after their first team-up.
We see a young Tiana and her mom in Detroit years ago in a back-up story, where Vulture keeps dropping cash for them and being referred to as an "angel." Her mom doesn't want to keep it but he drops by at intervals to convince her to take care of the girl, and Tiana eventually eavesdrops and meets him five years later. She's allowed to go flying with him as all Adrian wants is to make up for his deadbeat son, Frankie, leaving them.
Sadly, the mom passes away a few years later, due to an accident on the hospital table, and Adrian asks Tiana to be her guardian, and he gives her something better than a graduation dress: Vulture tech. She dons the red suit and takes to the skies, believing this is what she was meant for and her grandpa offers her a place in Brooklyn.
This is what led to her meeting Miles when she tracked Tombstone's gang in the present. However, when she asked about her destiny back then, rather than try to bring her into his life of theft, Adrian let her choose her own path, confirming he was genuine after all and sincerely cared about his granddaughter's well-being.
It'll be intriguing to see how her relationship with Miles evolves now because once again, their paths cross after Peter Parker asks him to handle some more robberies as he's got a full slate with being an Avenger and his own endless set of problems. Accepting this responsibility again, Miles and Starling bump into each other to investigate the scenes once more, and the two had a palpable romantic spark. While the two aren't star-crossed lovers quite yet, the fact Tiana revealed her identity so early on to him is a bit telling. Nonetheless, she seems to be aiming to right the wrongs of Adrian and could be a great candidate for a Champions spot, which is why she wants Miles to believe in her.
She does have some baggage, though, as she tried to murder Tombstone for killing her best friend, but the full details of that incident have yet to be divulged. While she's been a little evasive about the issue towards Miles, he seems eager at the idea of her becoming his partner in crime-fighting. Now, it'll be interesting to see if she can redeem the Toomes legacy and earn Miles' full trust someday.
