The following contains major spoilers for Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #1, available now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel's Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #1 sheds some light on why Jane was once again called to lift Mjolnir.

Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #1 comes from writer Torunn Grønbekk, artist Michael Dowling, color artist Jesus Aburtov and letterer VC's Joe Sabino. In the issue, Jane is standing in her apartment when, out of nowhere, Mjolnir comes crashing through her window. Jane waits to see if Thor will show up and reclaim his weapon, which noticeably is smeared in blood; however, the God of Thunder is nowhere to be seen.

Using the Bifrost, Sif contacts Jane from Asgard but is unable to give her any concrete answers as she's unsure what happened to Thor. "He was there, and then he was...gone," Sif tells Jane. "Gone from my sight, lost to the realms." She later wonders, "You have Mjolnir. [Thor] threw it to you. Is Thor...is our king Dead?" Using her powers as Valkyrie, Jane determines that Thor isn't dead but, like Sif, is unable to see where he is.

Jane has little time to contemplate all this or what's being asked of her as Asgard is under attack by the Dark Elves. Beta Ray Bill, who Thor declared Master of War over Asgard in Donny Cates and Aaron Kuder's Thor #7, is leading defense over the oncoming attack, though Sif is sure that more enemies beyond the Dark Enemies will soon be arriving as well.

As the Asgardian war erupts, Jane does what she knows she must and picks up Mjolnir. "I do not want it," her inner-monologue reads. "At least, not like this. The chemistry in my mind changes. Subtle shifts -- in perspective -- in how I perceive time. In how I look at people. In purpose. I go from mortal to god." While she can still lift the hammer, Jane ultimately decides to resist some level of the power. "It is not the god in me I need right now," she explains. "I will face this as Jane Foster, Valkyrie."

The final page of Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #1 reveals that the God of Thunder is trapped in some sort of pit with a massive snake. Enchantress may or may not know where he is, but the issue reveals that she's interested in obtaining him as her "reward."

Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor #1 features cover art by Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer and Marte Gracia and variant cover art by Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard, Taurin Clarke, Martin Coccolo, Matthew Wilson and Peach Momoko. The issue is on sale now from Marvel.
