Marvel Comics has provided CBR with an exclusive preview of Hulk #1, by Donny Cates, Ryan Ottley and Frank Martin. In the preview, an unseen speaker posits a potentially huge game-changer for the Marvel Universe: What If the Hulk has been protecting everyone from Bruce Banner this entire time?
The preview opens with Hulk punching at a door in the middle of a wasteland, bloodying his hands as he goes. However, Hulk isn't able to get through the door. Soon, Hulk reveals the other side of the door, which is in an entirely different environment. A man, almost certainly Bruce, is walking away from the door. Those images feature a narration that, initially, recaps the theories that Hulk is a "manifestation of Doctor Banner's trauma that he experienced as a child. Or perhaps his Id. His Shadow. His fury. His rage." However, the narration soon turns that around, asking, "What if [Hulk] exists to protect us from Banner?"
Cates and Ottley's run comes following the end of the critically acclaimed Immortal Hulk series, which was helmed by Al Ewing and artist Joe Bennett. That series ended with Hulk seemingly losing his immortality. Later, a trailer for Hulk declared the titular green goliath was "immortal no more," with Cates and Ottley aiming to reinvent the character in some big ways.
