Disney and Marvel Studios are hoping for some big Oscar wins for Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

According to the official "For Your Consideration" site, Disney is pushing for all of 2022's various Marvel Cinematic Universe installments to be considered for the Best Picture Academy Award. All three of the aforementioned movies are also targeting nominations for Best VFX, Best Director, Best Costume Design, Best Adapted Screenplay and many others. The Academy has yet to officially announce the nominees for 2023's ceremony but the final list of contenders will be unveiled in the coming months.

While it remains to be seen whether any 2022 Marvel movie ends up in the running for an Academy Award, Disney is pushing hard for Wakanda Forever in particular. The emotional blockbuster, which also served as a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, has been fronting Angela Bassett, who plays the grieving Queen Ramonda, for Best Supporting Actress. Bassett has been nominated for Best Actress in the past but has yet to receive the coveted win.

Marvel Studios' Mixed 2022 Reviews

Based on the critical reception to Marvel Studio's 2022 theatrical slate, the MCU's core blockbusters left many critics wanting. While the Black Panther sequel generally earned praise for its layered characters and powerful performances, Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness received mixed reviews. The Odinson's latest big-screen adventure was criticized for its weak script and over-reliance on comedy, an aspect many fans thought was one of the movie's weakest elements. As for the Doctor Strange sequel, reviews praised director Sam Raimi's stylish take on the Master of the Mystic Arts but lamented its messy story and unfulfilling character arcs.

Marvel Studios has been a mainstay presence at the Academy Awards, starting with 2008's Iron Man. Despite various nominations for categories such as Best Visual Effects (The Avengers, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War) and Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Guardians of the Galaxy), Black Panther is the company's only movie to have been up for Best Picture. T'Challa's live-action debut may have lost out on the coveted award but did scoop the 2019 Oscars for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Original Score.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now in theaters. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder are streaming on Disney+.
