Marvel released a new variant cover for its upcoming series The United States of Captain America.

The cover, by artist Carmen Carnero (Miles Morales: Spider-Man, Captain Marvel) places Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson in the spotlight. Behind them, multiple new Captain Americas are shown in a red and white background created to look like the American flag. Carnero is part of Marvel's Stormbreaker initiative, which is meant to spotlight the next generation of up-and-coming comic book artists.

The United States of Captain America will see Rogers and Wilson embarking on a cross-country journey across America after the Captain America shield is stolen by a mysterious being. In the process, they run across multiple people inspired by the legend of Captain America, who the mystery thief is targeting. Each issue will feature a backup story centered around one of the various Captain Americas, with #1 featuring LGBTQ+ hero Aaron Fischer, #2 spotlighting Black teenager Nichelle Wright and #3 introducing Joe Gomez of the Kickapoo Tribe.

"It's an incredible gift and definitely a creative challenge to take on the character of Captain America, especially during these unprecedented times in our country's history. With this miniseries we're hoping to explore what the idea of Captain America means at this precise moment—not just on the grand stage of the world—but to everyday and often overlooked communities throughout the United States," Cantwell said when The United States of Captain America was first announced. The series debuts on Captain America's 80th anniversary, with Marvel publishing a special-one shot in March to celebrate the occasion.
