Marvel has announced its plans to launch a new tabletop role-playing system based on the publisher's iconic superhero universe.

The Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game will allow fans to insert themselves into Marvel's constantly growing multiverse of characters and stories. The official Playtest Rulebook is currently slated to arrive in 2022 and will include detailed instructions on the game's mechanics, setting and playable characters. Players will be able to take on the roles of their favorite heroes or create entirely new ones as they battle against any number of recognizable super-villains.

The Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game will make use of an "all-new D616 System," a reference to Earth-616, the universe that features most of Marvel's mainline continuity. The system has been designed with accessibility in mind, with Marvel mentioning that it will be easy to learn for newcomers and "a natural evolution for those familiar with the most popular tabletop role-playing games on the market."

Marvel elaborated on some of the mechanics players may encounter in the D616 system, teasing "Use Might, Agility, Resilience, Vigilance, Ego, and Logic to win the day, and discover your true abilities as you face impossible odds!"

The Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game is designed and co-written by Matt Fobeck, the author of the classic Dungeons and Dragons: Endless Quest series. Forbeck is also a contributing author to The Marvel Encyclopedia and plans on bringing that experience to the new role-playing game.

“As a lifelong Marvel fan and gamer, this project is a dream come true,” said Forbeck. “Fortunately, after writing a couple editions of The Marvel Encyclopedia and designing tabletop games professionally for over 30 years, I feel ready to help make this the best Marvel TTRPG experience ever. I can’t wait for everyone to have the chance to play it!”

Fans who want to participate in the design process will be able to offer feedback on the Playtest Rulebook when it launches in 2022. The final game is expected to release in 2023. Marvel confirmed that it will be sharing more news on the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game this fall.
