Ms. Marvel is one of many upcoming Disney+ TV shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it stars the eponymous young heroine Kamala Khan. However, unlike many MCU productions, Kamala's backstory and powers have been changed wholesale. This includes her connection to the Inhumans, which has seemingly been cut in the show.

Given how big Kamala has been pushed in the comics, perhaps Marvel should do the same to her there. This retcon might seem a bit extreme, but it only makes sense if Marvel is hoping for synergy. It also lines up with what was done for two other MCU heroes. Here's how and why Kamala's comic book story should be altered to fit the show.

Why Ms. Marvel's Origin Should Change In the Comics

Synergy is a big thing with the MCU, especially going forward with the new generation of heroes. While some fans might roll their eyes at it, this is definitely a special case. In the comics, Kamala is closely tied to the Inhumans, which sees her interacting with Medusa and the Inhuman Royal Family, namely their dog Lockjaw, and they're initially prominent members of her supporting cast. Of course, that isn't the case with the MCU, so changing things up will keep newcomers from being confused.

Ms. Marvel is definitely the most popular of the newer heroes besides Miles Morales, a.k.a. Ultimate Spider-Man. Thus, to have her comic book counterpart be so radically different when it comes to both premise and her superpowers will certainly curtail any long-term increase in sales for her comics. It's honestly almost a different character at this point, or at least a vastly different incarnation. Marvel can't even really use the excuse that DC can, in which various comic book reboots and a Multiverse that began with the Silver Age explain away incongruous character elements. Thus, it'd be best to somehow alter Kamala to fit the TV show version.

How Kamala's Origin Could Change to Fit the MCU

Though organically changing Kamala's origin and powers to fit the comics better might be a task, Marvel has done something similar before. Before the MCU (and possibly after Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness), Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were both mutants. Without Magneto or any of the other mutants around to explain their powers, their origins had to be changed in order to fit in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The comics quickly followed suit, erasing their mutant origins and thus decades of continuity and character development. Kamala isn't nearly as old as the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby creations, so if one retcon could be accepted, this one definitely could.

Perhaps the best way to explain the change would be for Kamala's Inhuman powers to fail her, forcing her to use the powered device that she has in the upcoming TV show. Better yet, perhaps even reveal that her Terrigenesis wasn't natural and that she was experimented upon by the Inhumans. Given their current return to obscurity and more than morally questionable history, positioning the Inhumans in a villainous light wouldn't be that hard. Of course, this wouldn't even be necessary if the Inhumans push in the comics and TV shows had actually succeeded. Given that it didn't, it's time for Ms. Marvel to completely divorce the Inhuman species.
