The Avengers have been around since almost the start of Marvel Comics. The team formed when Hulk was rampaging across the US under the control of Loki. This battle means that the first battle the Avengers took on was against one of the heroes who became a founding member of the team.

From that start, it was easy to see that The Avengers would fight each other, maybe not as much as the villains, but more than many fans would prefer to see. Whether they are just meeting on bad terms or have disagreed on matters of morals, here is a look at 10 of the most vicious fights between Avengers members.

10 THOR VS IRON MAN AND CAPTAIN AMERICA (AVENGERS)

The fight was not overly vicious but it was destructive, as the three core members of MCU's Avengers went into battle and pretty much destroyed an entire area of woodlands, fighting to a draw. Not only that but in the truest sense of homage to the comics, it was all over Loki.

Iron Man and Captain America captured Loki and were taking him by S.H.I.E.L.D. jet for questioning when Thor showed up and took his brother to get answers himself. Cap and Iron Man had no idea who Thor was, assumed he was an enemy, and the three Avengers fought a vicious battle before realizing none of them would win, and Loki wasn't worth the destruction.

9 CAPTAIN AMERICA VS. WOLVERINE (AVX)

In Avengers vs. X-Men, one of the most surprising twists in the series was that Wolverine, a mutant and loyal X-Men member for years, chose the side of The Avengers. It wasn't so much a surprise that he did it for his own reasons; Wolverine knew that Hope was dangerous if the Phoenix chose her.

Logan watched what the Phoenix Force did to Jean Grey, and he decided he would kill Hope—a young teenage girl—before he would allow her to gain the powers of the Phoenix. Captain America ordered Wolverine to remain behind. Logan said he was going anyway, and then Cap beat the crap out of him and left an unconscious Wolverine behind.

8 IRON MAN VS. HULK (AGE OF ULTRON)

Moving back to the MCU, Avengers: Age of Ultron was one of the least beloved of the movies. However, there was still a lot to like about it. In the film, Black Widow had found a way to tame Hulk when he lost his control, talking him down.

But at one point, the Hulk found himself controlled by the Scarlet Witch while she was still fighting for the wrong side. He lost control and went on a rampage. Iron Man had to call down his Hulk Buster armor, and the two destroyed an entire town in their fight before Iron Man stopped Hulk. The battle was so vicious that it partially caused the creation of the Sokovia Accords and started the Civil War.

7 THOR VS. HULK (THOR: RAGNAROK)

Thor disappeared after Avengers: Age of Ultron. He was on the Avengers jet and just flew off to nowhere. He didn't actually go to Knowhere, home of The Collector, but he went instead to Sakaar. There, Thor was captured and forced to fight in gladiatorial battles, and saw that he had to fight Hulk. Thor didn't want it, but Hulk went full-strength, and the two had a fight that Thor almost won when he called his lightning power through his body.

6 THOR VS. IRON MAN (CIVIL WAR)

During the Civil War in the comics, Iron Man did a lot of dubious things. Needing to win so bad, he created things, such as a clone of Thor to fight on their side. The clone then killed Goliath. This murder caused Spider-Man to defect from Iron Man's side. It also caused Thor, when he returned, to attack and beat the living crap out of Iron Man. The best part of the fight came when Thor told Iron Man that the only reason he didn't finish him off was that he had other things to worry about.

5 IRON MAN VS. AVENGERS (THE CROSSING)

Iron Man betraying the Avengers during The Crossing from Marvel Comics

So, Iron Man has believed he was holier than thou many times, especially in moments like Civil War, its aftermath, and even in the movies. However, at one point in the '90s, Marvel did something crazy with him: they made Iron Man an evil sleeper agent.

This story was a terrible failure when they tried it years later with Captain America, but with Iron Man...it was still not well accepted. Iron Man was a double-agent for Kang in The Crossing and double-crossed everyone. It ended with Tony dying and then he was replaced with his younger self in the mainstream timeline.

4 CAPTAIN AMERICA VS. GIANT MAN (ULTIMATES)

Ultimate Captain America vs Giant Man

If there is one significant difference between the 616 and the Ultimate Marvel Universe, it is that Captain America is a complete jerk. Even when he is beating up someone who deserves it, he has the propensity to go too far and many times he fights for selfish, antiquated reasons.

Just like in the 616, Hank Pym abused his wife. In the world of the Ultimates, he was a thousand times worse and put her in the hospital. As a result, Captain America fought Giant-Man in one of the most vicious fights in Avengers history. He humbled Hank and did it because he wanted to get together with Janet.

3 IRON MAN VS. CAPTAIN MARVEL (CIVIL WAR II)

Iron Man vs Captain Marvel

In Marvel's Civil War, Iron Man was on the side of the government, and Captain America felt that he was abusing the rights of superheroes everywhere with his registration act. Iron Man ended up winning, and Captain America ended up dead—but not by Iron Man's hands.

In Civil War II, Captain Marvel was on the side of the government, and Iron Man felt she was abusing the rights of superheroes everywhere by arresting them due to premonitions by an Inhuman. What resulted was a vicious fight that left Iron Man in a coma.

2 HULK VS. IRON MAN (WORLD WAR HULK)

In Marvel Comics, The Illuminati got rid of The Hulk because they felt he was too dangerous to leave on Earth. They tricked him, loaded him into a space ship, and launched him to what they thought was a deserted planet. It was Sakaar, and Hulk became a hero and leader, living on happily there.

A terrorist explosion killed his wife and loved ones, and he blamed those who banished him. Hulk returned to Earth in World War Hulk and just destroyed everyone. Black Bolt, Reed Richards, The X-Men, Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, She-Hulk and more fell to him. He also viciously destroyed Iron Man, one of the heroes who betrayed him.

1 CAPTAIN AMERICA VS. IRON MAN (CIVIL WAR)

The 10 Most Important Marvel “Wars”, Ranked

The most vicious battle ever between two members of The Avengers came in Civil War. It wasn't as devastating physically as when Iron Man and Hulk fought or had an ending like when Iron Man fought Captain Marvel. However, the battle was between the two Avengers people loved the most.

When Captain America was winning and beating the tar out of Iron Man, he looked around and saw that the superheroes fighting each other were scaring regular citizens. That is when Cap surrendered and stopped the fight on his own. These two former friends would not stop until one of them realized what they were doing was wrong.
