From longstanding marriages to tragic love affairs, the Marvel Universe is no stranger to superhero couples. But what about supervillains? Are they not entitled to the same happiness (or misery) associated with being in a relationship?

In the comic world, is a 'couple' strictly two humans? Or is there room to explore the relationship between a man and his symbiote?  In this list, we explore the evilest supervillain couples in the Marvel Universe.

10 The Absorbing Man & Titania

The golden standard of Marvel supervillain couples, “Crusher” Creel and Mary MacPherran met during the original Secret Wars on Battleworld. Following their return to Earth, this gruesome twosome proceeded to make life a living hell for heroes like Thor and She-Hulk.

The couple's commitment to both villainy and each other led them to marriage and supervillain teams such as The Frightful Four. With a close to 35 year history between them, it’s sure that the Marvel Universe will be plagued by this Bonnie and Clyde team for many years to come.

9 Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch (Ultimate Marvel)

A refreshed update of the Marvel Universe, the Ultimate line delivered contemporary takes on long-standing characters within a modern setting. As part of the Ultimate X-Men series, The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver shared some elements with their mainstream counterparts, but their level of dedication to the Brotherhood was intensified in this continuity.

This iteration of the mutant terrorist organization performed extremely heinous acts, of which the twins could be considered at the forefront due to their high rank and familial affiliation with its founder, Magneto. When you factor in the ambiguous nature of their relationship (think Game of Thrones) you have a couple of taboo-breaking terrorists hell-bent on placing themselves at the top of mutantkind’s new world order.

8 The Kingpin & Vanessa Fisk

A virtually untouchable behemoth, the Kingpin is Marvel's undisputed master of organized crime, whose machinations have frequently put him in conflict with “street-level” heroes like the Punisher and Spider-Man. However, Kingpin does have one Achilles heel; his love for his wife, Vanessa, who often displayed an outright hostility to her husband’s business but eventually turned to crime.

Both often made Daredevil the target of their ire,  systematically attempting to destroy Matt Murdock’s life through assassination attempts, exposing his identity, and revoking his law license. In addition to the terrible effects their criminal activities have on normal citizens, their vendetta against Daredevil makes them one of the most nefarious couples in the Marvel Universe.

7 Fenris (Andrea & Andreas Strucker)

Andrea and Andreas von Strucker hold hands

Twins of Hydra leader Wolfgang von Strucker, Andrea and Andreas Strucker followed in their father’s villainous footsteps by founding Fenris, a terrorist organization based on their father’s warped and twisted Nazi-esque ideals. Pursuing their agenda of world domination, the twins use their mutant ability to create bolts of bio-energy to oppose the X-Men.

Though not romantically involved, this “gifted” brother and sister combo is responsible for some of the worst atrocities against mutantkind ever seen, including manipulating Wolverine and pursuing a personal vendetta against Magneto. When coupled with the twins’ shrewd manipulations of the Thunderbolts and the Dark Avengers, Fenris remains an evil force to be reckoned with.

6 Venom (Eddie Brock & the Symbiote)

When Spider-Man returned to Earth with his new costume after the original Secret Wars, little did the hero know that his new suit was actually a sentient symbiotic alien. Eventually, Spider-Man managed to ditch the symbiote, but it bonded with Eddie Brock, a photojournalist whose career was ruined by Peter Parker.

This joining resulted in one of the most deadly additions to Spider-Man’s Rogues Gallery ever: Venom. The villain is not beyond murder in his mad quest to kill the web-slinger for what they perceive to be ruining their lives. Although Venom has sometimes flirted with being an anti-hero, and the symbiote itself has sometimes bonded to other hosts, the Brock/symbiote couple will always remain a deadly duo to Spider-Man.

5 Norman Osborn & Gwen Stacy

Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborn have an affair in Marvel Comics

Perhaps the deadliest villain in Spider-Man’s Rogues Gallery is Norman Osborn, the original Green Goblin. Learning Spider-Man's secret identity, The Goblin used it to make the rivalry between the two personal by killing Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man’s first love. This loss has haunted Spidey ever since, affecting his romantic relationships and reinforcing the pain he felt when his Uncle Ben died.

That is, until the controversial Sins Past storyline, which reveals that several months before her death, Gwen Stacy had an affair with Norman Osborn and gave birth to his twins. Although the twins eventually battled Spider-Man, the real damage was emotional. This shattering revelation was devastating to both Peter Parker and longtime fans, who for 30-odd years placed Gwen on a pedestal. Despite 15 years since the publication of the story, this treacherous tryst continues to leave a wound that has yet to fully heal.

4 Carnage & Shriek

When the homicidal Cletus Kassidy joined with the offspring of the Venom symbiote, the menace known as Carnage was born.  Taking the combined forces of Venom and Spider-Man to defeat, Carnage escaped from his asylum a year later. Triggering the events of Maximum Carnage, he also freed the supervillainess known as Shriek, whose love for indiscriminate murder and mayhem he adored.

After numerous civilian deaths and significant property damage, the riot was ended by the combined efforts of Spider-Man, Venom, and several Avengers, but with the currently-running Absolute Carnage storyline set to unleash this evil and sadistic twosome upon the Marvel Universe once more, expect the body count to rise significantly.

3 Onslaught (Professor X & Magneto)

The ideological differences between the peace-loving Professor X and the militant Magneto have formed the core conflict of the X-Men books. This paradigm shifted when in response to Magneto’s ripping Wolverine’s adamantium off his bones, Professor X mindwiped him, placing the Master of Magnetism in a vegetative coma.

A drastic move and somewhat out of character for the professor, it was later revealed that the dark aspects of Magneto’s psyche found their way into Xavier’s unconscious and merged with it.  This created a being of immense psychic energy named Onslaught, who immediately embarked on a mission of devastation that put him in direct conflict with the entire Marvel Universe and resulted in the apparent “deaths” of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. Although the heroes eventually returned, this psychic amalgamation unleashed an unspeakable evil whose actions are still felt to this day.

2 Galactus & His Herald(s)

Silver Surfer and Galactus Marvel Comics

The all-powerful Galactus must consume planets to survive. To do so, he imbues select individuals with the Power Cosmic to seek suitable planets out, effectively making them his heralds. The most famous is the Silver Surfer, who offered himself to Galactus if he would spare his homeworld from destruction. This pairing has since been responsible for billions of deaths throughout the universe, and although the Surfer has since seen the error of his ways and parted from Galactus, the blood of billions is still on his hands.

This continues to haunt the Surfer, as he tries to make amends for his evil acts through a life devoted to heroism. However, as Galactus can easily replace any of his heralds, this cataclysmic combination remains one of the most singularly destructive couples in the Marvel Universe.

1 Thanos & Mistress Death

Thanos became obsessed with Death at a young age, parlaying that interest into a full-blown obsession as he matured and sought to win Death’s favor through acts of murder and genocide. To amass enough power to commit those acts, Thanos sought items that would grant him near-omnipotence, such as the Cosmic Cube and most (in)famously, the Infinity Gems.

Thanos' acquisition of the Infinity stones gave him mastery of the universe and allowed him to fulfill Death’s wish to eliminate half of all life in the universe with a literal snap of his fingers. To this day, this decimation remains the single most devastatingly evil act perpetrated by a villainous couple: Thanos on behalf of his love, Mistress Death.
